I am looking to buy a new Reg Cab 4x4 Flareside. It is going to be ordered with the off road package and auto trans. What I am wondering, it what engine I should order it with?. I was considering the V6, or 4.6 V8, but I am concerned with fuel mileage. If the 6 is only marginally better on fuel than the 8, then I want my extra horses! But, if there is a much better diffence with the 6, say, 5-6 MPG on average, then I will go with the 6. Can anyone give me some insight on this? I am looking for real world examples, not magazine estimates. I currently have a 95 4x4 SWB, with a 302 and 5 speed. And it gets 19-20 MPG when it wants to. I would like to get something better, obviously, but I understand that these are 4500lb trucks, so 19-20 in a new flareside would be acceptable.
Any help, much appreciated.
The new vehicles don't come with the V6, they only come with the choice of the 4.6L or 5.4L engines. That is of course if you are talking about full size trucks. If you want numbers, my buddy just bought a 2000 F-150 Supercab 4x4 with the 4.6L and he is getting around 15 mpg around town. He claims to be getting 19 on the highway.
Thought I would share my experience with you if that helps: I have a 99 F150 Extended cab, 5.4L, Automatic, 3.73 limited slip axle, 4x4, off-road package with 17" tires/wheels (Goodyear Wrangler AT/S).
I have driven it now for over 33,000 miles since new and have averaged 14-15 MPG with an occasional 16 MPG. I have installed a K&N low-restriction air intake system, and cat-back dual exhaust fed through a single glass pack muffler then splitting out to two exhaust pipes.
While towing my 3500 pound boat/trailer with a full cab of family and bed load of coolers, suitcases, etc. the mileage drops off to about 10-12 MPG.
LAST EDITED ON 16-Jan-01 AT 03:24 PM (EST)[p]I have a '01 RC 4x4 with the 4.6L V8 with 3.31 rear axle, auto, and I get anywhere from 13mpg to 18mpg, with the average being 15 with a 60/40 split of city/highway driving. Course the engine only has 2,000km on it..
5.4 and 3.33 gears with Superchip and K&N Filter, 16" wheels with posi-track. I have never seen over 16 mpg, 14 is average. But as another member says to do: I drive it like I stole it! :-)
My '01 E (not F) 350 has the 5.4L. Loaded will all of the kids and their crap I can get 19 mpg on the highway, but only with the cruise control at 55. When the kids start to scream and the wife gives the look of death the heavy foot will come out, and I get 13-15 mpg at 70-80 mpg.
FYI I've been tracking my MPG on my 99 f150 SC 5.4 4x4 since last June. (new in March) The best I've gotten is 18.1 MPG (US) on the highway driving back from Dawson City one weekend last summer. Worse was 9.5 MPG (US) a couple weeks ago when it was minus 30c with lots of idling. We'll see how it goes when it hits minus 40! :-)
I have a '97 F150, 5.4, tow package, 16" wheels and I have never gotten better then 13 mpg. Most of the time its around 12, when I tow my boat it's ~9-10. These numbers don't change much whether I drive I drive like I stole it or like a Grandmother.
That's me to. My 97 F-150 Ext Cab Long Bed w/figerglass topper gets around 10-11 on a good day. Will the K&N Filter help much on fuel? I'm sitting at 51,000 and have just changed Trany fluid & filter, plugs and tune-up. I always check tire pressure. I hope the tune-up helps. My 40 mile round trip to and from work is killing me. $50 in fuel. Man -O- Man!

I have a 97 F150 SC Short Box 4.6 4x4. I get between 16-19 MPG depending on the season. I put a fiberglass lid on it this past summer which helped a little. If I could just drive 55 or 60 I know I would get 18 - 19 regularly. All I remember is babying it until about 25K. I have 88K now and haven't changed the plugs yet (100K). Tire size also plays a big role.
if you are exspecting good mpg don't exspect good hualing capiblitys. Go with the 4.6 ltr v8 195 hp I beleave. It is plenty for light loads or for driving around town.
But you want a truck to get better than 18-21 mpg your not going to want a new truck I segjest you get a 95 f-150 with the v6 in it if you are really looking for mpg.
Or deal with the 15 mpg in town and 18 or 20 on the freeway. It all really depends on how you drive if your easy on the gas you will get the amount I stated or better.
I have a 95 eddie beaur bronco with a 5.8 and I get 16 in town and 18 on the free way. So size of the engine dosn't matter to much but more the way you drive.
