Anyone, I'm new to the mechanic scene and don't know a lot. i'm tryin though. i have a 76 ford f-100 4X4. i'm putting a 66 Mercury Merauder 390 in it. i replaced the front and rear main seals and put the engine in the truck. there seems to be a little knock or something in the front of the engine. i thought it was the fuel pump making the noise, but i removed it and it still makes the noise. I'm also missing on one cylinder on the driver side. a friend told me it may be a lifter not primed. how do i get it primed? i've checked compression and have 170-180 on the driver side and 180-190 on the passenger side. ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!
I actually found the ticking last night. Something is hitting the Timing Chain Cover. I think it may be the Cam that actuates the Fuel Pump, hitting the Threaded part that holds the Timing Indicator Bolt. It's like the Cam is sticking out too far. Not real sure though.
On FEs the cam is retained by a plate with two bolts behind the timing gear. This makes it unlikly the cam is protruding from the block. I seem to recall that older FEs - like your 66 - use a two piece eccentric bolted to the front of the timing gear to drive the fuel pump. Perhaps that is worn out. Later FEs - like my 76 - use a one piece eccentric.
Maybe I am wrong but the eccentric has a bolt in the center and a hole for a pin thats on the cam maybe didnt line up so the pin hit the hole? eccentric is then sticking out!
