My 1968 F-250 was the first vehicle i ever owned. I bought it when i was 15 (ten years ago) i still have it, and plan to restore it. The question i pose to the group is, is there a 5-speed transmission that i can pair to my 360? As of right now i have the 4-speed with granny low which is nice for a workhorse (although its only a 2WD). With speed limits being high around here and gas prices going up up up, i thought it would be good to get a 5th gear so that i can cruise at a lower RPM. Anybody else come up with this question?
5th gear sure is nice. naturally you do as you wish, I will tell you what i did.
My truck was an automatic to start with. I went with an aod from a 91 Mustang. If I had known then what I know now I would have went with a manual. Even though I would have had to buy the linklage It would have been cheeper. First I bought an aod and had it rebuilt. Then I had to buy a correct flywheel as an early 302 is balanced different. then the drive shaft was to long. The headers I had would not fit as the aod is wider. Then the tv cable then a cable kit fron I did it. So it got involved. hope yours works out better than mine
This was the subject of some pages-long threads not too long ago. For the FE motor, you are really limited to the car trans (not T5, too light) such as mentioned prior, or the NV 4500.
You could do a rear axle ratio change, as your granny first trans will allow you to pull an extremely tall rear axle.
As for gas, the 360 is an expert at using it, so if you are going to keep this thing, consider the upgrade to 390, higher compression, headers, intake, small 4bbl. Double your power, use about the same gas, maybe less depending on gearing etc.
This nv4500 5sd o/d has been done a few times with trucks on this site .. IT was a piece a cake for me, just have all the stuff before you get satarted or try too. I think the 4x4 is the easiest because you just move the crossmember back around 4" , cut the jackshaft about 6" and so on. 2wd you have to rework the cross member.. Anyway at 60 mph, I' now tech around 1900 from 2600 rpm. my 2cents

Ima, have you considered a Clark 5 speed ? Very available and not very exspensive. I paid 250$ for a Clark 285V ( 6.99/4.09/2.24/1.47/1.00 ) and all of the needed stuff. Not an overdrive, but cheap enough to let you re-gear the rear axle or get taller tires, or both. DinosaurFan, on an old 'puter work threw out
I see you're a big Clark fan. Every time I read one of your pro-Clark posts, I do a search for "clark transmissions" or "eaton transmissions" or "used eaton transmissions". I find nothing usable. Do you have any links? Where did you find these units? What about input shaft size? Trans to bell pattern? Output shaft size, yoke, u-joint? How much do they weigh? Are they all snychro? What condition and with how many miles would you expect to find a used one for $250? How many yards of clear space between the dash and rear window does he need to accomodate the shift throws?
Clark is a fine trans, but tell the OP how & where to find one and what he has to do to bolt it into a light duty truck.
