So I have a Jeep J10 truck, all that is missing is a bed.
I'm thinking of stripping it down to the frame and putting a new body on it.
I have two idea's and I would like your opinions on which one I should go for.
FIRST IDEA:
Strip down the frame and plop a '72 Chevelle body on it. Put some 38" Tires and drop a 460 in it.
SECOND IDEA:
GO all out! 70's Chevy Truck body. Ford parts in it. D60's all round. 460CI Engine. 44" or taller tires. Deck it out with some warn body armor.
Basicly both idea's are of a long term project and will be something that people will notice. The reason i'm using the J10 frame is because its the perfect size for whatever I want, little modification needed. ANd of course I have one laying around. As for the engine, i'll START with the 460 and bore it and supe it up from there. I'm aiming for 500+ HP. I just happen to have a spare 460 engine and transmission laying around, with a rebuild and some preformance parts they'll be good in my project.
Now don't go flaming me. This thing will look like a chevy, but it'll be powered by a FORD engine, running on FORD running gear. And its not going to be called a Chevy. IF anyone needs to know its a work of art.
Well why not put a ford body on it? Just curious. I wouldn't do the chevelle thing, i personally think trar's are stupid looking.
As for the 500+ hp 460, shouldn't have a problem with that one. I think Kris is up around 700 and he around a 514 stroker maybe 520ish. There are charts on 460ford.com that list a hp range and the exact parts that you will need to get to that hp range. It list what gas you will have to use also, its really neat. Check it out, it could put your 500hp in perspective, also with that many ponies, your probably gunna be breaking stock shafts on the 60 i think chromo will be in order, but why not go all out, heck nowa days you can get a set of rocks cheaper than a 60-70 set. stroked 460 rocks, 44"+ tires, get in touch with nick, he will be able to lead you in the right direction.
And as for the Chevelle, I want a car with a big engine. Either a lifted up car or a street thing. And plopping it on a 4x4 frame would be kind of cool. Although it would kind of be a mall-crawler i'd still wheel it lightly. Mud bogs and that, not too hard on the trails though.
If I was to use a Ford body i'd probably go High Boy or something. I don't like my style ford as much as I like the older fords.
I just think that the 70's rigs look cooler for either Chevy or Fords.
Its funny you say Kris is up to around 700 cause my name is Kris and I plan to be.
As the quote from "American Graffiti", "What a waste of machinery." Why would you want to let everyone think you had a bad a-- Chevy. Stand proud, mount a neat old Ford body on those rails. Sounds as if you will have enough power for whatever you choose. Good luck!

500 hp is very attainable on a 460, with out building a stroker.
I like the old ford body styles, car body on a truck frame is retarted. JMO
take it how you would like.
If you would like PM me and i can set you up with the link to a 460 hp chart.
Mods arent really keen on linking to other "competitive" site.
See if you could find a really old truck body like 40's and 50's that would be cool... Find one kinda straight, paint it up to protect from rust and there you go...
I've always been the truist and think it should be "insert brand here" throughout. I thought that car bodies on a 4by chassis looked kinda cheesy/dorky. And why tarnish a Ford drivetrain with a Chevy body. Anyways, I think if you put something on 44's people will notice. Why not just throw a flatbed on there, wrap it in an exo-cage and make it a bullet proof trail rig.
What he said.

I've seen some that look pretty damn nice. Granted there are some that look just plain retarded. Also, I don't want a new trail rig. I plan to build my F-350 into a full time trail rig once I
get something to replace it as the daily driver.

If you don't think I should use a Chevelle or a 70's truck. What would you suggest?
Truckin4life:
I love that idea about the older trucks. Its hard to find something like that for cheap.
Most people think that because they have a 60 year old piece of rust that its worth alot.
Actually my idol Stacey David ( Hosted Trucks! and now the host of Gearz ) built something called SGT.ROCK
Blue Bomber:
There is no bed, although we had a flatbed made for it 8 years ago. Lol. But the cab is near unusable. Too much restoration that would need to go into that cab. Needs new windows, floor, and the front end is messed up. Aswell as ALOT MORE!
ok. i thought it was rust related. i know how hard it is to find J10 parts, there isnt much left out there. the older ford would be cool. maybe you can use fiberglass body panels to keep the weight down (better MPG). if you want to use it as a DD why not put a heathy 300 straight six in it? they pretty much fit in to anything.
I say if your going the Ford route on the motor why not the body. Im a sticker for Either all Ford or all Chevy. Hey just my 2 cents. I can see where your coming from though. If Im driving a Ford it will be all Ford or all Chevy that route. Good Luck on whatever you decide to do. I'm a huge 460 fan so thats a good start for your project.
