What is the rev/mile for my 33/12.50/17 tires. And also my dad has a 01 f150 crewcab. If mine works out which so far it is. He wants to get one would be all 87 octane setting would you recomend the custom or pre programed tunes. He wants it for a little better mileage. 2 miles is all he is really looking for cause he knows he cant expect much more. He dont step on it he takes it easy so I dont think he should have a problem. We tow a boat and snowmobile trailer everyonce in awhile so the tow setting would be a must.
For the Rev per mile of your tires, go on the tire manufactuerers site and get the info. If that site doesn't have it look up the tire size specs of a BfGoodrich AT in the same size, I know they have the info.
Your dad won't see a 2mpg increase with a tuner on his truck regardless of tuner manufacturer.
A good tune for 87 actually fattens up the A/F ratio. An SCT 87 fuel economy tune for a 4.6l F-150 only made .3mpg better with the economy tune tested in Ford Performance Trucks mag. I find it super hard to believe your seeing a 2 mpg increase with 87, must be some other variable in there that caused it. Is your speedo, odometer and everthing spot on, especially after you switched to larger tires. From my experience with tunes on modulars you don't gain mpg on 87 and you won't gain hardly any power on 87 either, however there are other benefits to tuning. Some said they gained 2 mpg on a 93 tune, I still find it hard to believe, though higher octane usually has little to no ethanol in it. Just too many varibles, ethanol content, fuel quality, air temp, oxygenated vs non oxygenated fuel, load, terrain, wind restanse and etc.
Well on the 87 economy tune I went 107 miles and filled it up just to see. It took me 6.3 gallons to fill up which equals 16.98 mpg so round up and its 17. I do all my mpg calculations by hand since I dont have a thing on my truck to tell me. My speedo is 5 mph fast but I reset the odo and pulled out my gps and reset the odo on that and it was dead on. So everything is on except the speedo. I tried to get the speedometer reset when I bought it cause it was off without the tires and they said there is nothing they can do cause its stock tires. Figured bigger tires would change it to.

I'll disagree with this statement. The 5.4L's can gain 2-3 mpg with a good tune-especially the VCT 3V's. Not everybody knows how to accomplish this, but some of us do.

The tunes from SCT aren't that good out of the box. Some of them are downright horrible. SCT's F150 base files tells me they might spend more time with Mustangs than F150 programming and anyone who builds off them, are building tunes from a bad start. Lots of things that are more valid for Mustangs. A good F150 file needs to be written with the F150 needs in mind, and can accomplish things like better mileage and better power (and no, the power isnt increased by fattening up the a/f). The SCT shifting, better than stock but still horrible.
Special attention to how the transmission is dealt with (especially TC lockup strategy) alone can increase mileage. Careful who you choose to custom tune your vehicle, a lot of tooners out there claiming to be be tuners and all they do is take a less than stellar base file and make less than stellar changes (if any at all).
To answer the first question, the estimated Rev/Mile on 33's is 610 (with a 4% tire squish).
As Johnny and Ken mentioned, 2+ MPG is absolutely possible and we have customers that regularly see those numbers. In fact, on our Expedition we've seen 4+ MPG (documented) on long highway trips and 2+ with local driving. It all in the tuning. Of course, as Johnny mentioned, I have a 2005 with a 5.4L VCT 3V which is significantly different than an 01 4.6L 2V. On those 1 to 1.5 MPG is fairly common. Oh, and I also have a 3.30 gear which really helps those highway numbers.
Ken, I agree with you on the SCT truck tuning. Like you, I believe they spend the lion's share of their time on Mustangs, GTs, and other more exotic vehicles and less on the F150s. If one was to go with an X-Cal, then either Troyer or Justin at VMP would certainly be the tuner of choice.
