4.6L Water/Coolant leaking into engine oil
LAST EDITED ON 04-Feb-01 AT 07:46 PM (EST)[p]I have noticed evidence of water in my engine oil. When I take off the oil filler cap, there is alot of white creamy foam on the cap and on the sides of the oil filler tube. My dealership told me it was condensation. I have cleaned it all up, changed the oil, and ran it on the highway for over 120 miles to burn off any "condensation". I now have more foam under the oil filler cap and tube than before. I have 1000 miles on the new oil. Anyone heard of "condensation" or this type of problem with the 4.6L??

After rereading your message: 1) How far do your drive to work?
2) Are you seeing a loss of coolant. 3) If the engine is not coming up to temp on your daily drives then yes, it could very well be condensation, especially with cold/very cold temps. Idling to warm it up is not a good fix (the engine was meant to be driven). On very short daily trips it would be possible to put on a 1000 miles and have a lot of condensation in the oil filler cap.

If it is coolant you have to be loosing it from the Overflow can/radiator.
Some leaks will develope as the engine goes through a temp change. NOT NORMAL!! I have seen engines hold preasure COLD and loose coolant!
I have put paper towels aroung hose comnnections and the thermostat to see if i have a `driving leak`....the paper will hold the coolant for later inspection.
I have had `old mechanix` try and pass off a bad gasket job as condensation!! in the oil

I dont want to step on anyones toes but here goes.If you have taken your truck to say Jiffy lube for an oil change, and they topped off all your fluids,be adivsed that you cant mix the coolant, your truck my have the life time coolant, and the yearly change fluid is mixed iam told it will start chemicle reaction in the motor.and could effect the head gasket.look in your manualto see what coolant you should use. Just a thought....Redeye

You have the ideal drive to work then. You should NOT be having condensation in your oil, period. A daily drive like that is considered the ideal to eliminate moisture. I had not heard about the Jiffy Lube coolant. Something is definitely not right in your system.

ultramagdan;First off I didnt mean to imply that the fault is Jiffy lube.I used that name for lack of a better name.all guick change stores do the same thing.they topoff all fluid levels. Jiffy lube dose a great service for the older driver who cant lay on the ground to change his or her oil.So please dont think that its only one store. But for all of you out there.Read the owners guide befor you let someone service your truck or car. hope you find the leak.Redeye

Your case caught my eye since I happen to see a service bulletin listing that sounds related.
Go to "http://www.alldata.com/TSB/20/972016BX.html" and note the following:
..TSB Number...Issue Date......TSB Title
..99-20-7.......OCT 99......Coolant Loss/Engine Oil Contamination, 3.8L, 4.2L ....
So, maybe a dealer can help you with reference to that. Good luck!

Ultramagdan; In your owners manual it will tell you whats in your truck. It will also give you advice on the type of coolant you should use.It will give you the numbers that you should not mix.Dexcool is bright orange and the other is green like prestone. But they all have code numbers on them. i hope this helps Redeye
