hi everyone. i've been on the 61-66 forum mostly since i have a 64 F-100 anyway upon cleaning my valve covers i found an epa sticker. this 64 f100 has a 1972 302 in it. and it runs fairly well. for a little while, i've been messing with the cooling system (the rad. had a large hole in it. had that re cored) then i replaced the thermostat (what was left of it) put in a flush kit basicly, a tee in the heater hose. and flushed all the rust out twice. figured i was good and put the green prestone coolant in. finally got it on the road and it over heats / boils over making a big mess, so today i got an electric fan and thermostat controler. put it on and the best i could get it set to do is delay the boil over.
now i'm thinking maybe it could use a thermostat at a lower temp.
i am open to opinions at this point. if anyone has an idea please share.
sorry for the long post however i feel its all important.
Have you pulled the water pump? Two things can happen that don't cause a leak. First, with the remains of the t-stat in circulation, the impeller might be chewed up and be ineffective. Second, I had a new pump spin the impeller, or rather the shaft spun and the impeller didn't.
Bad head gaskets usually result in a miss in these engines, but do look at the coolant for gray color, bubbles, any sign of gas in the coolant.
Check hoses etc for blockages.
Check t-stat area for any debris or anything that might cause t stat to stick one way or the other.
