block plate question

im swapping 351's in a 77 4wd pu. the block plate that i took off had the bottom half cut off, exposing the flywheel. when i put it back together i used a new block plate. all the bellhousing bolts lined up but the bottom of the plate does not match the bottom of the bell housing. the starter bolt holes dont line up either. what is up with this? why doesnt the plate fit the bellhousing?

sounds like you have the block plate for a different trans/flywheel diameter. auto trans block plates have access panels that bolt on to the bottom so you can get at the converter bolts, standard trans block plates are solid.

different flywheel diameters need to locate the starter in a different place so they line up to the flywheel.

what trans are you using and what is the block plate for, does it have the access panel at the bottom or is it solid?

the one i have in has the access hole with the cover plate at the bottom. it came from an auto trans. (took off the flexplate and put the flywheel and clutch on.) i am using a manual trans. just assumed the bellhousings would be the same size. guess i didnt compare the diameter of the flexplate to the diameter of the flywheel. but your answer makes sense. thank you for the response.
