60 amps

Drove my truck to work the other day.. all is fine... go out to start it to go home... it starts and I get a really loud alternator belt squeal.. the ammeter pegs.. shut it off and restart, same thing happens... I check the belt.. it's tight.. well, I have to get home.. 10 miles so I go..

Squealing finally stops but ammeter stays pegged at 60 above idle. I get home without frying anything... get my trusty digital voltmeter, attach it to the battery at idle and I get 16.7 volts, off idle, I get 17.4 volts.. engine shut off, battery shows 13.2 volts... nothing smells burnt, no wiring toasted...

Engine is a '70 351W.. wiring is out of a '76 T-bird.. (where the original donor engine came from).. ignition system is ACCEL 300+ running thru a speedshop rebuilt recurved duraspark dist. Alternator and voltage reg are about 3 years old (Autozone specials)...

I suspect either the alternator or voltage reg..

suggestions before I pull them out for checking?

I would be on track with you and have the alternator AND reg. checked and if you can just replace both
