I had a real similar sounding problem to this in my 88 F150. Parking lights come on as normal at the first detent, headlights come on as normal at the second detent. My problem was that when the headlights came on, all the rest went off!
Tried replacing the switch, but it turned out I had a fuse that had fallen out. The missing fuse wasn't listed in the Haynes book, but was shown on the fuse box diagram on the cover.
I guess that shows you should read everything before assuming you broke something!

had this same problem on my 94 super duty. I had to replace the switch twice what i didn't notice the first time was on the back of the wiring harness the plug was melted. Fortunately ford sells a repair plug with wire leads on it have'nt had a problem since
