Engine Id
1968 thru midyear 1979 429/460 takes one type of flexplate, midyear 1979 460 and later takes another.
Look for the block casting number to determine which flexplate you need. I believe it's near the starter.
If the casting number is: C8VE, C9VE, D0VE or DIVE-6015-AB, AB1 or AB2 = DISZ6375A .. Flexplate-429/460 / These 429/460 engines do not use a weighted spacer between the harmonic balancer and the timing cover.
If the block casting number is D9TE-6015-AB = D9TZ6375A .. Flexplate / These 1979 and later 460's use a weighted spacer.
Both these flexplate are still available from Ford, and FTE has Ford dealer parts dept sponsors that will save you money if you buy the parts from them. Examples:
D1SZ6375A = MSRP: $101.37 / FTEpartsguy.com price: $72.98
D9TZ6375A = MSRP: $100.55 / FTEpartsguy.com price: $72.40
There's an error in one part of FTEpartsguy's website, it sez this is a manual tranny flywheel. IT IS NOT! The other parts of the site say: A/T...that is right.
The site also sez 1984 and later, that's incorrect, D9TZ = 1979 part number, and from midyear 1979 and later is correct.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you have a M/T, it gets complicated...because there was no 460 with a manual trans till 1983...so the only pre 1983 flywheel available back then was the 1969/71 429 Cobra Jet/Super Cobra Jet, or Boss 429 flywheel, what we used to use for these conversions in the 1970's, since there was nothing available anywhere else at that time. This flywheel is obsolete, no longer available from Ford, and is very hard (and expensive) to find used.
If you need a M/T flywheel, why?
Is it warped, or is the ring gear bad? The ring gear is available as a separate part for either flywheel.
