I have an erratic problem. At times my truck will not even "click" or "grind" when I try to start it. Just completely nothing. I can let it sit for a 20 minutes then it may start up like a champ. I can jump the silenoid when this is happening and it starts up. I replaced the silenoid, and that didn't fix it. Just now I put a test light on the ignition lead to the silenoid and it did not light up when someone tried to start it. My next assumption would be an ignition switch. If I were to replace it, where does it go? And has anyone else had this problem, or have feed back about what else it could be? It seems to start fine when it's COLD, and I don't mean a little cold, I mean -10F cold. But if started, you can shut it down in cold weather for an hour, and it may not start. But it will the following morning. I've replaced the battery also, btw. with a caterpillar 6 full year warranty battery.
Thanks in advance,
Mitch
Sounds like the ignition switch. Probably not sealed anymore, full of moisture. When it is cold, the moisture if frost, but after it warms up, forget about it. Sits on top of the column under the dash. Not too tough to change, just get a good Chilton's and follow the directions. Make sure to get a good replacement switch, some aftermarket switches are JUNK. You can usually tell by a warranty.
ford had a silent recall on f-150's in the year of your truck.contact your local ford dealer and see if yours was covered.the ignition switches were faulty and quit a few trucks burnt to the ground.
