I recently obtained a used (1997) aerostar to replace my 1989 that has a bad engine. The 1997 had a damaged rear door that needed t be replaced.
So, I took the rear door off the 89 . It fit perfectly on the 97 but, the wiring is different. Had to cut all the wires from the doors to remove them.
When I checked the lights after installing the door I needed only a license plate light (I thought). I used my test light to find and connect the license plate light. When taking a test drive I discovered that the cruse control does not work any more. My son says the wires that I cut on the 97 are probably the reason for no cruse control.
There are several wires, all taped, but not connected. Does anyone know how I can find the wire (s) and how to connect them: if they caused the cruse control to stop working?
The cruise control (and torque converter lock-up) have to work with the rear ABS (RABS) to function properly. One of the things the RABS does is a check of all the light bulbs used by the brake system to determine whether it wants to function. I think the 1997 models have that third brake light on top of the hatch, and the 1989 model does not. That may be one of the bulbs checked by the RABS. Are you getting any brake warning lights (specifically one for the RABS)? Try installing a small light bulb into the rear wiring harness, even if it's going to be hidden inside the hatch. Also, check to make sure your other brake light bulbs are still working.

I'd go with the explanation above, sounds like the circuit could monitor brake light wattage (combined), therefore if a bulb is out, the circuit will flag no brake lights & cease to function. Get someone to pulse on the brake pedal while you check for voltage on the rear door wire harness. You'll need to run a bulb of similar wattage to "fool" the system into functioning.
