shifter wont move past reverse

shifter wont move past reverse
my G/F's aerostar's shifter wont move past reverse with the engine on or off. i looked under the van and saw the shifter cable has a broken plastic tube on it on the driverside of the transmission, the metal rod that goes through the plastic tube is bent also. could this be the reason? its a 1996 ,2wd, 3.0 liter auto.

update: the van got fixed last night. it was the shifter cable. me and a friend fixed it in about an hour. thank you for all the help. when i get some pics of my truck up ill post some of the van. its not much but it was free thanks to her parents (i wish my parents would give me vehicles)
