i was wandering if i would be hurting anything by getting rid of my stock muffler on my 1997 f250hd with a 460 and just running a straight piece of 3 inch pipe out the back of the cat
No I dont think so some people say its harmful to the engine but I dont think it is lots of people have mixed opinions ask your mechanic or exhaust guy
The EFI system on thse trucks is designed to automatically adjust to changes in airflow throught the motor, you can do anything you want to the exhaust system as long as the O2 sensor is present and connected. In general the stock exhaust system is designed to be quiet above all else and it does sacrifice some power to achieve that goal.

I have an 88 F-250HD with 352W and had a whole new exhaust installed
but went with dual glass packs with tail pipes running out behind tires
on both sides.
Much cheaper than the stock system which was $400 compared to the $200
I spent.
No cat, no harm !
