First real pull.....impressed

I finally hooked up to something worth mentioning and towing, my boat. The boat and trailer weights in the neighborhood of 8000lbs. My previous tow vehicle was a 97 Expedition 5.4, and this 08 Super Duty Diesel is sooo much nicer. I feel like I am towing the boat with the truck instead of pushing the truck with the boat like I did before.

However, I did notice that the trailer light connector cover on the truck is broken????????? I only have 1850 miles on the truck, and I know it was there when the truck was delivered about a month ago???????? I figure the plastic cover was brittle and must have been bumped or something.

Sounds like you hit it on something. The cover is pretty hefty.

I go on the pulling stage tomorrow with my 08 DRW to the tune of 16K. I can't wait. May not sleep tonight. I have babyed her and drove her just like they recommend for break-in and now its time. I will keep you posted.

These 6.4's are some towing rigs, no doubt. Here's my biggest load. Trailer is 6,500 lbs and the packer weighs 16,500 lbs. Just "slightly" overloaded. Pulled it like a hoss tho.

Dzldude,

I towed my 20K gooseneck trailer with my Yanmar CBL to a job today. The 08 was great! Wait the 08 was awesome!!! Better than my 06 and my 06 pulls great. I was only getting about 1.5 MPG less my 06 at 70MPH. I did some experimenting on the trip and realized that if you slow down to about 64MPH you gain about 1MPG. Interesting stuff.

South Texas, without the chip and dpf delete would you be saying the same thing? My 6.0 liter pulled better than this 2008. I did have an 03 motor though too before Ford began de-tuning everything. I do not feel the extra HP on the 6.4 liter compensated for the power loss from the emission stuff. I love the truck nonetheless but it is not as good of a puller stock as my stock 04 was.

When I was pulling that load I did not have any extra horsepower from the programmer. I wouldn't pull a load that large with more than stock power due to EGT's. I only had the truck programmed to allow the DPF delete.

So yes the truck pulls amazing even with the stock HP.

Interesting.... My '07 certainly doesn't feel as strong as my friend's '08, and that's with a 3.55 ratio in the '08!

I'm sniffing around the dealers this weekend, have a hair up my butt to get an F450 that I don't need, just 'cause the deals are gettin' soooo sweeeet...

If you liked that, how's this:

F450 9,200
Trailer 9,000
Tank 16,500
ATV 500
Passengers and cargo 500

Total 35,700

It pulled like an ANIMAL

Thanks South Texas you answered my question. with the DPF delete you get more power than stock.

Diesel Dan, The 03 and 04's had more power than the 05 and later 6.0 liters and got better mileage in most cases. This was one of their strategies for reducing head gasket failures as well as numerous changes in the design of the head, head gasket/bolt combinations. If I remember correctly 07 was when Ford began the "commonization" effort for the upcoming 6.4 liter which basically means the 07 6.0 liter is about as far as you can get from their early model of the same motor. Still amazes me how many different programming changes and strategies Ford tried with the 6.0 liter. I have only had one reflash on my 6.4 so far and that was for the tranny.

The '03's and '04's had more power? I thought they bumped it up in '05 and after... What were the earlier ones rated at? The '05s thru my year are 325HP and 570 lb ft (3300 and 2000 rpm respectively)...

No that didn't answer your question. You're assuming that since the DPF was off there was more power. I just means my DPF was off when I pulled that. If you think that by just removing the DPF my truck suddenly was able to tow 20k easily, you're definitely mistaken.

I made several trips pulling 20,000+ lbs while the DPF was still on my truck and it pulled the same. The reason for removing the the DPF is to increase fuel mileage and ALLOW the addition of more horsepower. The DPF creates very little back pressure during normal driving, in the area of 1.5 psi at 70 mph.
