failed emisisons because of high nox. First thing I was told to do was give it a tune up, and since the truck was due I went ahead and did it. Took the truck back and the nox went up. So now I am down to the egr or catalytic converter. Since each part is about 200 I was wondering if there is a way to test either one to help me decide which one to fix.
NOx is almost always EGR. That's what its function is, to reduce NOx in the exhaust. A new cat will burn some of it as well, but you should really fix the root of the problem.
The haynes manual has a very good explanation of how this system works. I suggest you read it to fully understand how the EGR system works.
Now for the questions - you said you gave it a tune-up. What exactly did you do? Have you pulled the codes? Even if the check engine light isn't on, there may still be codes stored that will help you figure out what the problem is.
