I have a '94 F-150 w/ auto-hubs. I'm going to convert to the Warn manual hubs. My question is this: If I have push button 4wd in the truck, will I continue to use that to activate 4WD? In the manual hubs are in FREE mode, I'm 2wd...if I put them in lock mode, I'm still in 2wd until I hit the 4x4 button in the truck, correct? Then when I hit the 4x4 button again, I'm back in 2wd even though the hubs are in LOCK setting.
Is that how the manual hubs will operate with my push-button in the truck?
after this all the pushbutton will do is spin a little motor on the xfer. and you can run engageed without hubs all day - u just should not do it while moving
If I have the manual hubs in the locked position, and I'm driving down the street in 2wd mode, and come up on some big snow (hopefully not this time of year)...can I hit the pushbutton inside to go into 4wd without bringing the truck to a stop?
Yes, cobrar97, you are correct. When the hubs are locked, the front driveline(axles, differential, and driveshaft) spins all the time. 4WD is ready to go whenever you push the button and engage the transfercase. Be aware you will notice a little more driveline wear and vibration while locked.
can I hit the pushbutton inside to go into 4wd without bringing the truck to a stop?
Yes you can. You can engage it up to about 35 mph. I do it all the time.
You shouldn't notice any more vibration when in 4x4. The biggest penalty will be in gas mileage, which will be a couple mpgs. I don't know why people are always pointing out that your front end will wear out quicker - I can't recall the last time I saw a front end worn out from using 4x4 unless the truck was under constant abuse.
