I didn't want to hijack the gun safe thread to ask this, but since it was brought up there, I have to ask: Why was the seat back tilt locked in my regular cab truck? Back in the day every one I can remember always tilted forward so you could store things back there. Is it some kind of safety restraint so it doesn't come forward in a head on collision? But if your seat belt was fastened it would restrain you and it from going forward, right? I guess I'm just an old redneck but I took mine off so I could store small stuff back there.
My 78 has a latch on it that can easily be pulled to lean it forward, but my grandpas 76 with the gas tank behind the seat freely moves forward, although he may have just removed it long ago, he's a farmer haha
That's interesting about the in-cab gas tank issue, I know some of the trucks I saw back in the '70s had them and the seat still tilted forward. My jack handle stores behind there, and has a thumbscrew clamp securing it to the floor, and was a PITA to get at by just sliding the seat forward. I could see having a latch to keep the seat back from moving forward in an accident, but mine had 1/4" steel cutout plates bolted to each side of the seat to hold it in place, which I removed.
Thats a good question since my '76 F250 4X4 the seat tilts forward and has a flip up latch to fold the seat forward.
.
Yup, my 79 is the same way. I thought they were all like that.
Really, I'm not trying to be an @$$, but have you looked to see if there is a latch on the very end? It's a peice of flat steel that kind of hooks over the frame that comes out of the "seat" part of the seat. That's the best way I can describe without using words like "dohickey" and "whatsit".
Just asking, because I know I'm capable of overlooking things like that!
I wondered that too, but no, this is a 1/4" thick piece of steel with a teardrop-shaped hole cut in it that goes over the latch pin on the seat back, and bolts fast to the seat belt bracket. It can't move up and down. They went to a great deal of trouble to make sure that seat back can't move.
The seat in my 75 Has a latch to keep it in the back position but you can easily lift up on it to move it forward My truck has a tank in the bed and a tank in the cab.
My Aussie F100 has a fixed pc. on both ends of the seat so it's seat-back won't move ........I just pull it forward if I want something from back there,(when I'm not in the seat) my jack is back there, my speakers too, & some brake fluid the p.o. left me............. my fuel tank isn't in-cab either.
