I read back though the last 5 or 6 pages of messages and got some ideas but none was quite my problem...I bought a 79 F150 over this last weekend. The front left turn signal was out along with the reverse lights. I figured it was the bulbs so I swapped 'em out and the turn signal worked. Reverse lights didn't, I figure its the tranny switch. (i'll get to that soon)
So tonight I drive the truck to the spray washer and when I turn on the headlights, the front left turn signal goes out again. Burned out the bulb. I figure ground fault? But then, the left rear blinker works with the headlight off, but stays on solid when the lights are on. The hazards work sans front left until you turn the headlights on then the left rear blinks opposite the right rear.
Last truck I had these compound problems on was a 85 dodge (it was actually a good truck once I fixed the electrics). Ended up being the turn signal switch in the column. Took me a month of running wires to figure it out though. Do you think I should start by swapping that or should I start with the grounds and go from there?
Hi this may or may not help you but there is one other thing you need to check first if it has one, the connector for trailer lights, The wiring in it and to it could be bad or just hooked up wrong causing the problems you describe, if you dont see one, there could still be one up under the bumper or just the wires could be hanging, its worth checking out, I know one thing for sure if the trailer connector is not right nothing else in the tail lights or signal lights will work right, hope this helps
I've got it solved I think. Turns out it was a loose wire in the socket for the Frnt Lft signal. Works fine as long as the wire stays pushed in to the socket completely.
The solid light and other assorted wierdness went away when I removed the trailer pigtail and the Foglights. I don't know which was causing the problems but thier gone.
Fortunatley theres a junkyard 10 minutes away that has 8 76-80 Ford pickups with lots of parts still attached. Maybe even a backup/neutral switch for the tranny (to get the backup lights working) which is the next project.
