When I drive my truck now I have the following problems.
Surging... as I'm driving down the road the rpms will raise a few hundred, then drop back down. This is accompanied by plumes of big black smoke from the tailpipe.
Stalling... In stop and go situations the engine will just stop. It fires right back up every time.
Choppy idle...sounds like I have a nasty cam in there (but I don't!!)
All of this is random, but fairly regular. I just changed out the fuel filters, and have added injector cleaner the last couple of tanks.
Anyone have any suggestions?
03 6.0 PSD 80000miles
Thanks.
having the same problem with my wifes 03 6.0L F-250. just dropped it off at the mechanics shop and he is going to run diagnostics on it tomorrow. what would be indications of a blown head gasket?
Thanks for the info. I went this morning and bought the o-ring kit from Ford, and a can of their carb cleaner. I am following the directions from that permanent post at the top of the page. This S.O.B. is stuck!! How hard can i crank on this thing w/o damaging it?
It's loose enough to rotate in its bore w/ a pry bar, but I've got a 4 foot jack handle tied to it, and it aint coming off!
Any more suggestions? BTW, thanks for the replies, it is appreciated.

The 2 O-rings make it very tight to pull out. I can pop mine out by using 2 prybars on opposite sides and prying it up evenly. It's just a pain trying to fit 2 prybars in there without much room.
Or you can take a piece of welding rod and bend it in a loop and secure each end to each of the tabs where you took out the bolts, then you can put a long bar through that and pull straight up!
and FWIW......the Cam position sensor and Crank position sensors on a 6.0 are virtually bulletproof with the exception of the o-rings leaking occassionally. If you get a CPS/CMS (cam position sensor) or a CKS code it's usually from an extended crank time and/or a faulty/corrupted PCM file, not because the sensors are bad.
I finally got the EGR out, lots of dry sooty crap on it. Cleaned it all real nice and popped it back in. It seems to run a bit better, but I've only put maybe 20 miles on it so far. Tomorrow I have about a 200 mile round trip to do so we'll see what issues, if any, pop up. Thanks for all the responses.
