Got a question. Just got a truck that had some animals get up in it and eat wiring up. Almost done with it all except the wiring to the fuel pump on the frame rail. Theres 2 wires that come off the pump (has eyelets on each to bolt to the pump) about 1' or so of wiring and a plug on the other end. The wiring seems to be aluminum, not copper. Local dealerships cant find the harness unless i get them a part number, and the only number i'm getting is the one on the plug it self, i think the part number for the harness was on the tubing and they managed to eat that.
Anyone know if it would be ok to use copper wiring to repair the harness? Will there be an issue mixing copper and aluminum? I'm going to look online and try to find the part number now.
I don't see how copper wiring would make the pump not run, but if you mix copper and aluminum wiring you will end up with corrosion that could be a problem. Unfortunately not all dealers are helpful.
If you put copper and aluminum together you have electrolysis, which causes corrosionas Chris said. If for some reason you have to connect copper and aluminum wire use Noalox to prevent this from happening.
If you wanted to send a little more power to the pump, you can always use the stock fuel pump wiring to activate a realay with a larger gauge wire coming directly from the battery going through that relay. It's pretty simple to do and should help the pump run better and if my electrical knowledge is right, also give longer pump life.
I did that with the Powerstroke and have done it again on the conversion. I've actually got some 10 Gague, fine strand amplifier power wire (for a car stereo amp) powering the pump this time around. It outta provide plenty of power to the pump.
