My friend has a 2000 7.3 4WD F250 that up until a month or so ago was flawless...this fuse issue has happened 2 times...first, fortunate for him he was pulling his 5 th wheel and gear into a stop when the fuse popped...engine dropped to idle, tach died and basicly lost power but engine didnt die...just a power loss...Im not sure what fuse controls this particular circuit as I havent looked at the fuse panel to see for myself. I am wondering if any of you guys have had this happen or know of a cause...or if this issue has generated a recall or TSB...btw, its an automatic OD.
The 2nd time this happened was a week ago...no load or anything...was just turning it around, had in reverse and w/o coming to a dead stop put it in drive and the fuse popped again...exact same stuff died and engine went to idle and so on...He, and I am of the thinking it may have something to do with a sensor of some type in the trans. If any of you guys can shed light on this it would be much appreciated...also if anyone can steer me to a pg that says what fuse runs which circuits on this that would be immensely appreciated...he's going camping this weekend and is really worried about it happening again...I told him to keep the fuse box open that way if it happens again, at least it will be a faster fix.
Again, its a 2000 7.3 auto w/OD 3/4 ton 4WD loaded beast...also, just for curiosities sake...what kind of fuel mileage have you guys been averaging with your rigs and how are the fuel prices in your area.
Also, when the fuse thing happens, its in 2WD...

The fuse that died would help a lot.

 

I was blowing that same fuse. The problem I had was in the overhead consol. I fixed the overhead consol and no more blown fuse. The sympoms I had were the same as his. Does hes overhead consol work?

Wow...this board is really hopping.....anyways, heres an update on the problem...

Get a load of this...the next night after I posted this thread and I had gone with him to get fuel ...before the Labor day vacation and all....The trip to get fuel was nothing special...truck worked fine...He did hit the OD switch onvce...Im not sure if he kicked it in or out...I dont recall...
Anyway, the next morning he comes out, fires up the beast...kicks down to idle straight away...popped fuse 1...fixed, and attempted to back truck out of driveway to hook up...in midst of this fuse popped again...replaced 2nd fuse...got into position to hook up after essentially a 3 point turn in reverse...fuse popped yet again....so, with trailer loaded and all ready to go...they said forget it and called for a hook...
Fast fwd to dealer and hooked up the puter...no codes came up...he said they thought initially it may be something with the water/fuel seperator I believe he said...Im not sure if this is an electrical part or not...either way, it wasnt that....a bit more digging and so on and badda bing...gear shift selector lever...with OD switch as Action 4478 mentioned was bad...when he said that, as I had called and asked him to reply as I asked about what you guys mentioned, but he never returned my call...so, Im wondering...


How many of you guys have had this sucker go bad OR had the same problem on your truck ?? Im wondering if Ford has issed a TSB on this issue at all as well...or a recall as to me, even w/o seeing the part, it sounds like insulation chaffing/cracking/pinching and thus grounding/shorting out and thus popping fuses...

there is no recall on this but it is common..i got a new shifter for 50 bucks and protected the wires the best i could.....glad he got it fixed....

 

Me too....he was glad it puked in front of the house vs on the road with 5th wheel attached...If anyone has a pic of this sucker, I would love to see it...he didnt keep the old one...

I had this same issue. I took the steering column apart and the hot wire to the OD was shorted to the column. There was also another spot where it had almost rubbed through. I believe the wire is purple or purple with a tracer.
