INTERVAL WIPERS PROBLEM-79 BRONCO

My 79 Bronco with the optional interval wipers has a gremlin. Since electrical isn't my forte, I am wondering if anyone has seen this same problem and has a solution. My wipers will not shut off! Once turned on, they will stay on even if the switch is shut off. To turn off the wipers, the ignition has to be shut off at the EXACT moment the wipers are down (the park mode at the bottom of the windshield), if not, the wipers will stay running. The 2 speeds work correctly, but when the switch is rotated to counter clockwise to the interval mode, the wipers stay at low speed. I have replaced the switch, electronic wiper black box, and checked the ground, with no luck. The control box was hideously expensive, and I hope that isn't the problem- I may convert back to regular wipers if that is the case. Any help would be much appreciated!!!

I just got out of a hairy mess with 70's Motorcraft wiper motors. Did it just start doing this? If so, I'm willing to bet it's either the parking switch on the motor itself or the wiring that relays the wiper arm position back to the switch on the dash. 12V is fed to the upper half of the motor as long as you have key-on power. The 12V is then fed back to the wiper switch through a couple different paths, depending on the wiper motor's position. The wiper switch uses this signal to determine how much longer to feed power to the bottom half of the motor when the wiper switch is in the OFF position. When the switch gets the right signal, it knows the wipers are ready to "park" and cuts power to the bottom half of the motor until it is turned on again.

For whatever reason that parking switch isn't working and I agree that you should replace the motor. The parking switch inside the motor is a tiny piece of plastic and opening up the motor probably won't do much good. Be prepared for a wild time replacing that thing though. If you get a remanufactured wiper motor from a parts store, you don't get the wiper arm or any of the pieces needed; just the bare motor itself. You have to transfer the wiper arm over to the new motor using a bearing puller and it's hard on a 30 year old wiper arm. Plus I have never had luck with anything that is remanufactured. I'd see if you could get a direct replacement from a junkyard first.

I also have this in case it helps, not sure if it's too old for your application or not. http://web.umr.edu/~jjlm98/wm.jpg

The problem is usually the governor though.
