Loss of Power Steering

I couple of weeks ago I replaced my power steering pump (1994 F150 5.8L). I then noticed that one of the old hoses was leaking, so I replaced both of them last night. After getting them replaced, I added the fluid and started it up, moved the steering wheel back and forth (stop to stop) a couple of time to make sure I had the fluid level topped off. I left the truck running while I put away tools and cleaned up. I then sit back in the truck and turn the steering wheel--I now have now no power assist! Any ideas of what could have happened or what to try?

The connections at the gear box were rusted pretty good, so I may have gotten a few little bits of rust into the box, though I got all of it out I could with q-tips. But it certainly worked for a little while.

Rust could have plugged hydraulic orifices inside box.

Also, the hoses usually deteriorate from inside out. It is good practice to replace old hoses when replacing other steering components. Particles from inside of the hose could contaminate the box also.

Is there a clogged filter? Look inside the return line. Some filters slip inside return line and are hard to see.

After checking for clogged filter, I would flush system out with new fluid and install new or clean filter.

There certainly weren't any filters that I could see within the new hoses. I'll try flushing it out to see if I can get it working again. Thanks for the tip.

It could just be trapped air, the instructions with the power steering pump should have mentioned how to get rid of it if any.

Turn the wheel to full lock and hold a little pressure against it, then do it the other way until all the air is bled off.

You could disconnect the high pressure line from the gear box and turn the wheel a little and see if it pushes fluid out under pressure. May be enough to blow it clear, air dirt what have ya.
If you do that fill the pump all the way to the top first, have a helper just lightly turn the wheel while you hold a bucket under the line. Careful not to run the pump dry.

The new supply-side pressure hose I installed had a port for a switch that came with a plug in it. Yesterday afternoon, I started it up and removed the plug. Fluid flowed out, but at very little pressure. It was nothing like the 1000 psi I've been reading about on the web. So I assume that the pump has died and I will replace it. Thanks for all of the tips. If that isn't the problem I'll be back.

I'll try, but not sure what they'll do since I'll be returning my current one under warranty. Do you happen to know if I can use the same recently purchase hose? Or does the saginaw pump have different connections?

Tell them you are returning a defective pump and you will get the replacement somewhere else. They should give $$ back.

Yes it should use a pressure hose from 78-79 Bronco.
(some have said that thier factory hose still works, but I think that is those that use the Econoline van pumps)

The part numbers are in this thread here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/6...ering-fix.html

ok, i got another question... i had the part number, and i knew you were sopposed to use a 79 bronco pressure hose. i've got two trucks, my 95 f150 4x4 and my 95 f150 2wd. I know the pump works for both, but will the hose be the same for both as well?

Go to an auto parts website and investigate.
I use Auto Parts Fast at RockAuto
or Online Auto Parts and Auto Accessories Store at PartsAmerica.com

Good luck

slm, for what it's worth, alot of times they don't warranty ps pumps unless the hoses are replaced at same time. Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.
