Hey All, well i`ve pulled my 351m and put in 77 460 kept the 4 speed with granny gear, needing starter help, used 390 flywheel, drilled out to use 351m diaphram clutch, pressure plate. also cut down collar that throw out bearing rides on. used inner hole in crank for pilot bearing, 390 flywheel has 183 teeth. Which starter do i need? the 351m that i tried to use cranks about a half a turn, and busts the nose off. have tried numerous 351m's new and used. 351m which has 9 teeth on starter. Have been told to use 460 starter. 77 460 the motor i've used is from a Lincoln. NEED HELP. or steer me in the right direction, have tried engine swaps, nothing yet. Thanks.
I thought that the 351M/400 and the 429/460 starters were the same. I'm guessing since you got a 390 flywheel you need a 390 starter, but I dont know much. Good luck and let us know what you figure out. Hopefully someone smarter than me will come along soon and give you a for sure answer.
Yes your right correct it has 184 teeth. and it is a 390 flywheel been drilled to put on 351m diapham don`t remember bolt circle but was told to use that type. but it was a 351m clutch set. Thanks all, for the input. would really like to get this going.
You definately need to use a 385 series starter which in turn is the same as a 351m/400!!! Did you have trouble finding a correct flywheel?? I would suggest that and you should have no problem!! Mix and matching parts is an headache waiting down the road!!! Just my 2 cents though!!! Goodluck!
I`ve used all the parts like i was told to do this change over, the flywheel was from napa was nomproblem to get tho. like i said before it only cranks about a half turn and then busts nose on starter, changed motor and does same thing thought that i may have bent crank but i didn`t. Thanks for the reply was wondering if the part number on flywheel can be seen without removing?
Maybe you could put the nose from a 351M starter on a FE starter or just switch out the bendix and gear assembly so it matches your flywheel. It would really suck if you had to switch out your flywheel after all this work. Just throwing some ideas.
i am using a 390 flywheel on my 460 swap. drilled out to accept 12" diaphram styl clutch. have used 460 (with solenoid) and 400 starters with no problem
