I think the intake is what "detunes" the 2-valve V10 in the E-series by only 5 HP and 5ft/lbs of torque. It's not "detuned" - they just didn't have the vertical room. Also, I think the 3v needs a lot more vertically with the variable plenum setup.
My understanding is that the PCM is detuned due to cooling issues.
Don't shoot the messenger...it's just what I read.
While the intake is funky it is because there ain't enough room under there. The new front end solves that but makes it look like a droopy-eyed pig. They still, however, have the same funky, twisted intake.
I wouldn't worry about the 2 valve, I hear its indestructible. I know someone with 250,000 miles no problems and have read in a few forums people with same mileage or more. Some over 300,000 miles on engine. Most of them had an issue with tranny. That was before the torque shift though
Ford has an over heating problem with stuffing the 30V engine in the E series truck, so until Ford makes a major body change to the Van, all you can get is the 20V version engine.
And the torque rating is not all that much less, and torque is what counts when pulling heavy loads, like a motor home. I do see one Mfg advertising the 3 valve engine in there class C Motor Home, but I think its a misprint, or there using the F series truck.

How can you say that with certainty? Has there ever been a 3V V10 put into an E-series?
The 3V is being put into the large flat nosed motorhomes.
