here are some pics of my under cab i recently painted with Rust Bullet, one of our sponsers. Let me know what you guys think, and if you have used this product before.
Here is the finished product RB Black Shell. Little on the glossy side but i like it because it is harder than wood pecker lips and slick as grease. Hopefully will stay clean and chip free.
Looks great; I like the preventive measure for a long future. Too bad; I don't have the patience to go that far on my rebuild. Looking forward to seeing more progress.
That looks great! Did you blast it first? I have been trying to figure out what direction to go myself at this stage (my cab is off). What made you go with the black instead of the color that you decide to paint the whole truck? What do you plan to do with the firewall?
Thanks. I did blast if first. The reason i went with black is because of the Black Shell is black. The under side of the bed will be done sometime next week in the same manner. The fire wall, inner fenders, rad housing and vent portions of the dash will all be the original cream color.
The little bit of the foot panel will not be seen easily, the subframe and frame will all be black as well, so i hope it will all come together nicely. Now you got me second guessing myself...
That looks great! I'd love to do that with mine. I'm going to check out the sponsors page and find that stuff!!
Not to hijack here, but is it possible to apply that stuff well without tearing the truck down? My truck is solid and rust free now, I just want to keep it that way without taking it apart!
I bought the 6 pack of RB, it comes with 4 quarts of Rust Bullet and 2 quarts of black shell. I put on the recommended thickness of the RB and 2 coats of the Black shell. Basically 1 Qt of RB and 3/4 Qt of black shell for the cab.
The 6 pack runs $219. It took about three days to do all of the paint work, it's humidity specific so it'll be different each day.
Total time would be about 1 month, although it took me ~2months working on it off and on. I had to blast it all and replace the passenger floor board along with 2 small patches. The clean up was a real nightmare, the sand get's lodged and has to be removed so it doesn't get blown all over the fresh paint, wipe down the entire surface with Acetone to remove any dust or oil and i re-sealed all of the seams. That took me a solid 3 days
Clean up of the sprayer is a big deal too. Got to get the Acetone on it immediately.
Thanks for the comments. I'll be finishing up the bed with some patch panels, clean up and then painting it as well, hopefully by this weekend.
Jolly:
I think it would be, i chose to use it for undercoating and it comes with roll on instructions. The only concern is where the frame rails are in the way and any other things in the way. Do the research on this stuff before you buy it my opinion is that it is a very difficult product to work with because the prep work is the most important step, you have to get it down to bare metal, or be able to scuff the crap out of existing paint. It's meant to react with bare metal.
I found a blog of a guy who rolled it on his rusty truck underside. he scraped all of the scale off scuffed everything as good as he could and rolled it on over everything. He gave a 1 year update with a picture and it looked exactly the same as it did when he put it on. So it's noe impossible.
I just finished my frame and suspension parts with RB and I am very pleased. Like Duke said it is a lot of work and once you open the can you better move fast. I used a gallon on the frame and all suspension components and than went over the suspension parts with a quart of black shell. Everything was sand blasted and cleaned with acetone. Sprayed real nice but you have to be ready when you open that can cuase it starts to set up fast and dont leave it in the gun very long. Next time I would buy quarts.
It looks like rust bullet has the same properties as Chassis Saver except RB is UV resistant as opposed to Chassis Saver being UV sensitive. I used chassis saver on my frame and suspension. I may have to scuff the axles and paint over with something like the Black Shell if the sun gets to my axles and changes the color. I like the gloss black. Anyway, what I wanted to point out, I sprayed the frame and axles, but on many other parts, I just brushed Chassis Saver on and you really can't tell at all. It evens out really well. Spraying is nice cuz you can get into the nicks and crannies, but if you can brush it on, it does work pretty well. I assume you could do the same with RB. I would have used the stuff on my cab, except I just blasted it and the inside and underside Rhino-lined.
