Latest Used Oil Analysis

Well, I have my latest report from Blackstone. It has an oil change interval of almost 9k(8869) miles on this oil change. I had very good results considering that interval and for the time being I am not going to change a thing. This is on standard dino Shell Rotella T 15W40 oil. I am happy with it. I don't know how to post it though. I saved the file from Blackstone in a PDF form. If someone could help out a computer illiterate in that department, it would be greatly appreciated.

Looks good man. That motor is on its way to a long life. I hate however how blackstone does their reports. If you dont know what each element is then the report could get confusing. I wish the would break the elements down into catagories such as wear metal, additives, etc.

The lead wound very much concern me, and the viscosity is getting pretty low for only 9,000 miles. The rotella 15w40 seems to shear out faster than some of the other oils in our engines.

Scott, I've been using RPM Delo in engines for over 45 years. I'm a HUGE fan of "Dino Delo" and Baldwin filters. Never had a lubrication-related failure since, at 15, I replaced the oil in my '55 Plymouth's 270 V8 with diesel, "just to clean it out", and I let it idle for twenty minutes. Spun a bearing. What WAS I thinking? But I was just a kid with no experience. Time has a way of changing that!

This oil change is represented by the left three "white" columns. The rest of the sheet to the right are previous. The last change was at 158,002 mi. It will be fresh just before I leave for Arlington in a couple of months, however.

I was concerned about the magnesium level increase, so I wrote to them. This is what I got in reply:

"Magnesium has increased in this engine's oil recently. It is most commonly
a detergent/dispersant added at manufacture. It will help keep particles in
suspension in the oil so that they may be filtered. Some Delo 400 15W/40
samples that we've tested recently have had a higher concentration of
magnesium, others have not. Calcium is another detergent/dispersant; it's
usually quite prevalent in engine oil. In the case of your engine, you will
notice that over time, calcium has decreased a bit while magnesium has
increased. It could very well be that the additive mix in this oil has been
slightly modified. Higher magnesium readings shouldn't have any negative
effects on performance. Note that that the level of boron has also
increased. This is another dispersant/detergent element in the oil. Oil
companies will tinker with additive packages, in order to find the right
balance to improve oil performance. This should not be problematic for your
engine in any way. The wear trends that we've seen in your Navistar are
enviable, so you've obviously been doing the right things to keep it that
way. I hope that this message helps you out. If you have any other
questions or comments, feel free to contact us.

I don't have one. I just do what the guys/gals at Blackstone tell me to.

Nope. Just the Napa gold filter.

No, just send it to them with a check for $20 and wait about a week and a half.

Be VERY sure that your email address is clear on the form, however, as they will also mail you back a PDF of your report as well as a hard copy via USPS. I eventually opted to only get them via email.

Marv,

Just looking at the oil analysis you posted. Overall - looks very good, wear numbers are nice & low and Delo 400 is doing a great job. It's one of the few oils that uses Molybdenum in there additive package like Schaeffer's. Delo has a good track record with the 7.3L engine also.

But a couple of things caught my eye. It just wasn't magnesium that shows a steady increase on the last 3 oil analysis results - which are on the same oil since the last change was done at 158,002 miles. Boron is on the increase as well as is zinc, along with a slight increase in phosphorous and a trace amount of potasium. ussually don't see additives go up, just puzzling - not sure what to think. Was an additive added to the oil during this interval?

Also, SAE 40 has a Cst range of 12.5-16.29, so they are in error about the viscosity being at the low end of a 40 weight - it is actually a 30 weight.

Wow, Jason - 9K on rotella 15W-40 - first time I have seen a used oil analysis report on Rotella 15W-40 with that amount of miles not break down to a 30 weight as far as a 7.3L is concerned.

Here is a copy of a Rotella 15W-40 virgin oil sample to compare your report to. The only thing that caught my eye on your report was the higher level of the additive calcium compared to previous reports using Rotella. No problem, just an observation.

Did you use a different oil before Rotella 15W-40 on the past? Perhaphs Delo 400 or Schaeffer's - I see small amounts of Molybdenum in the oil sample.
