AOD Transmission Question

got a question about this thing...

what is it? I found it in the transmission pan and i cant find any thing like it in my transmission exploded view.
its in a 1988 F150 4X4 5.0L granted the exploded view diagram is from a 1985 mercury cougar but i didn't think the aod could have changed much in 3 years or could it have? thanx in advance

Can't see the image but if the thing is a round cylinder type piece with an o-ring it's the fill tube plug the factory installs when the tranny is built. Once the powertrain is in the vehicle the tube they insert to fill the tranny with fluid pushes the plug into the pan were it will stay until somebody drops the pan to change the fluid at some later date.

Did some more research

I asked a buddy down a the auto parts store. he said he found the same thing in the pan of his 5.0L stang he thinks its a dust plug from the factory and he just threw it away and hasn't had any trouble.
lets see if this pic works. angelfire is blocking my pic for some reason.

found this one with a google image search for "Ford Dust Plug"

thax

I wish I had a few of those. They come in handy to stick in when you pull the dip stick tube out of a transmission. This is great for storage, removal of the transmission or just getting the tube out of the way while changing the exhaust manifolds.

Never really thought about that Bill. Then again, I haven't pulled my tranny or changed my manifolds either.
