Shouldn't be this confusing!!!!!

Went to my local Autozone and ordered a filter for my automatic tranny. Deep pan or shallow pan? Look for 20 bolts he says. Find out later that both have 20 bolts. Said give me the fluid and I'll check further. They said use Mercon 5. My owners manual said to use straight Mercon. Their catalog said use Mercon 5. Does anyone sell straight Mercon any more?, I can't find it.
Went to Checker next. They said 4x4 is deep pan and 2wd is shallow. Sounds reasonable!!! Why didn't Autozone know that? Got the fluid?? Nope Bought the filter 10 bucs less than autozone????? Got Mercon left from last tranny service, don't want to drain converter, and need more fluid. Still haven't done anything. Not sure how many miles I will have before this situation is solved. Can you mix mercon with any other fluid? Some say multi application or service fluid. I give up!!!!!

They stop licensing Mercon when Mercon V came out. Mercon 5 is backwards compatible with straight Mercron.

They changed the Mercron V to use with our trucks trans. Can't get Mercron any more. Use Mercron V, no problems.

Thanks

I have an almost religious aversion to any "additives" - if the plain fluid is good enough for everyone else, why add something else to it?

Much less Lucas stuff, but I won't go there

Good point about the additives. I just thought it would give some extra benefits not formulated in the standard fluid.....Never claimed to be very bright!!!! :-)
Thanks

Most stay away from oil additives. Like Art said, best not to go there.

Yes, you can mix the two. I would do a complete flush if it was me.

Well, supposedly Mercon 5 is synthetic, whereas Mercon isn't. Do you mix synthetics with non-synthetics?

And in any event, Napa has a transmission fluid in a black bottle that that says its for "Dexron III and Mercon" users.

Mercon SP is the synthetic trans fluid, I think Mercon V is available as sythetic or standard dino.

Originally Mercon V was not backwards compatible with Mercon. Ford changed the formula a bit in order to make it backwards compatible.

Mercon SP is a totally different beast and should not be mixed under any circumstances.
