On my 85 F-250 the E brake works fine, but wont stay down anymore. One day I pulled the release and the brake made a huge POP under the dash when releasing. Now you push it down and the brake works, but the pedal does not latch down at all. I have looked and looked at it and I cant figure out what is missing, broke, or otherwise wrong with it. Anybody have a diagram for what it should look like or any other advice?
I have an '87 so I don't know if they are the same under the dash...
But with mine the metal assembly fatigued and broke at the folds where it meets the lower lip of the dashboard 'subframe'
It was a PITA to R&R without disassmbleing everything because of one nut up inside of this lip, but I did it.
I welded it up, greased the quadrant and everything's working fine now.
Maybe the spring that engages the pawl has broken?
First off, I recommend everyone push on the pedal as you pull the release handle. It won't slam hard leading to this situation. The pedal "latches" because there's a ratchet-like piece. The male isn't grapping the teeth. I forget but it sounds like there's a spring that tries to hold the male against the ratchet teeth. Perhaps it broke or became disengaged or came off completely and is sitting at the bottom. There's also a big stud that takes the brunt of releasing....that may have snapped off. You can look and see that easily.
