Spare Key

So when I bought my new to me truck 2 weeks back the dealer said he only had one set of keys/keyless fob to the truck.

I dont exactly trust myself with having just one set of keys. Its good to have atleast one other set of keys incase of emergency, or dare I even say I lock my keys in the truck somehow.

Did the 2004 F150's have the programmable keys where I need to get a special key made, or can I just take my key that I have and get a second set made at a locksmith or something? What are my options here? Thanks

Cory

You will need to have the key programmed. If you have 2 keys you can do it yourself. In your case, I would talk to the place that you bought your truck and see if you can talk them into progamming the key for free.

must have 2 keys to program them yourself

1. buy a spare or 2 off of eBay. I've bought several for about $12 each + shipping. Dealer wanted $40+ per key
2. go to dealer and pay the $40/50 charge for the new key to get programmed
3. program spare keys yourself once you have 2 functional keys...procedure is in the owners manual

sorry, but unless they comp you for a new key, it looks like you are going to be out $60 to 80 bucks. If you just pay for everything at the dealer, you'll probably pay about $150

Here is my source for PATS keys http://www.automotive1st.com/index.htm

If you want to add a key....
**You must have two original keys to perform this procedure. If you only have one key, you WILL have to take it to the dealer to get it programmed**
1. Insert and existing (working) key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder ON (RUN NOT START) and back to OFF. Ignition should stay on for at least ONE SECOND.
3. Remove the existing key and, within TEN seconds, insert a second working key and turn it to ON (RUN) and the back OFF. Ignition must be in ON for at least ONE second, but no more than TEN seconds. Remove the key.
4. Insert the new key before TWENTY seconds have elapsed and turn it to ON (RUN). Leave it the ON position for at least ONE second and turn back to OFF.
5. The security light will light up for THREE seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed.
6. To program additional keys, repeat steps 1 through 5

Thanks for the informative replies. I do only have one key. I just ordered a new key that needs to be cut and programmed, as well as a new key fob with it. It came as a combo deal for a good price.

I guess I'll just head down to the dealer and have them cut it and program it.

BigNiner19; I get mine cut at the local Walmart (they haven't charged me yet) as I provide the blank. Take a box of fresh donuts to the service managers office and ask nicely and they may not charge you for the programming. There is a Krispy Kreme shop across the street from my dealer. I'm the go to guy for my friends that have need of security keys so I've had practice.Get just one key programmed by the dealer and with the original key you can then program any additional key. You may want to order at least a third key so that should you lose one you will still have two keys with which program another without returning to the dealer.

Key FOB Questions
Mine is a '99 EB Expy, so the instructions might vary slightly:

1 -- have ALL fobs on hand, including those which might already be programmed correctly. The programming will "erase" your old ones.

2 -- Unlock the doors. Put the key in the ignition, and turn from "Off" to "ACC" eight times in under 10 seconds. The doors will lock. Leave key in the ACC position

3 -- Program the fobs by pressing any key on the fob. Do this for each fob. The doors locks will lock/unlock

4 -- Turn the key to Off. Locks will lock/unlock, and you are out of programming mode.

5 -- Test all remotes.

6 -- With the money you have saved, take your spouse out to supper.

When I factory ordered my truck (07 XLT) part of the deal was to include a third set of remote and key... I was scared that one day I may lost my key somewhere. Since this is a work truck and it gets to park, lock / unlock 10-15 different places per day, I was scared that one day I will lock myself out. To prevent this, I cut a "ordinary" key and hide it under the truck. This key will only open the door but will NOT start the truck or silent the alarm. It is nice to know that I can open the door and get to the programmed key if I lock myself out.

Just got a programmable key blank on ebay for $9 and change plus $5 for shipping. Fortunately I have 2 so I can program it myself. I had forgotten that I needed to do this, but the topic jogged my memory.

Since the dealer only had one set of keys, I would suggest that you tell him that since you are providing the second key, the dealer should program it for free. Who ever heard of a dealer only giving you one set of keys. I bet if you had told him the deal hinged on him providing a second set of keys you would not be in this situation. Good luck, and let us know how you made out!

OK. just got home with my newly purchased mint 2000 F-150
but with only one key and it has the chip. I am going to order a few
spare key blanks off EBAY. Can anyone other than the dealer
program the new key blanks if I only have one key ? Does the
dealer need my ONE operational key in order to program the others?

I went to Home Depot with my single key and they quoted $72
for each key copy and programming. Well I guess obviously they
can do it with only one key. But if I order the cheap key blank
from EBAY for about $12 bucks each, is there anyone else that
can program it for cheap compared to home depot or are their
prices cheap compared to the dealer ?

I saw a display at the local WallyWorld (Wal-mart) stating that they are soon to be selling and programming keys for vehicles.
