I have an 86 f150 efi 302. Im lookin to change out my exhaust system which is too big for the truck (3 inch). I am realy considering a true dual 2.25 from the manifolds back and than after it gets over the rear axle switching it up to a 3.5 inch exhaust exiting under the rear bumper.
Originally i was gunna run the same setup except instead of puttin the larger pipe on there i was just gunna get 3.5 x 24 tips.
To me i dont see a difference but maybe someone on here can point it out to me. Also, how would the sound of this setup be? thanks everyone, you all have helped me alot on my truck so far.
3.5x24" tips will probably go back almost to far, if you went with the pipe you would be gettin maybe another foot of 3.5 in pipe, than if you went with the tips.
I'd come off the manifolds and exit both pipes behind the rear wheel or go with a single exhaust. Come off the manifolds with dual 2" or so pipes into a nice smooth y, into a single 2.5" pipe.
Heres a pic of an Edelbrock cat-back for your truck that is a nice system. It exits both pipes in the stock location. Saw it reviewed in a magazine, its a nice system.
Dual 2.25" pipes is slightly larger than 3". If 3.00: is too large, dual 2.25" is going to be worse. If you want duals on your truck, I recommend dual 2.00" with 2.25" or bigger tailpipes. Or run a single 2.5" with dual tailpipes out the muffler.

Do it. I had the same setup on my 292 years ago and it sounded great. Extremely deep sound. I had almost 3 feet of the big pipe ( I used 4") and not only did it cost less than some big tips, it looked better, IMO.
BTW, 2.25" pipe isnt gonna hurt anything. IMO, 2" is an insult to a great engine.
Ya tell me bout it!! I could have got a dual exhaust glasspack system for my truck for 25 bucks. As soon as i looked at it, it had 2" pipe. I just walked away. The whole system was new tho.
4" pipe? That was my first thought for mine too but got to thinking it might be too big. Guess not. I'll look into the difference in price from 4 inch to 3.5.
What kind of mufflers did you run on yours? Im thinking about dynomax bullets but not sure yet. I want something that will be loud and deep but at the same time have a nice tone to it.
