My 2000 X has started leaking from the rear pinion seal again. About a year and half ago the pinion seal was leaking but didnt leave any puddles in the driveway or anything to let me know something was wrong. Well I ran it dry and ate up the rear end.
I had the rear end rebuild by Ford under the after market extended warranty I bought with the truck. Everything has been great. Until I take the Ex in for spark plugs at 113,000 miles. They noted on the free inspection that the rear pinion seal is leaking. Sure enough fresh gear oil seeping down the axle housing from the pinion.
Any ideas? I have no vibrations. Everything seems to fine except im eating pinion seals. The only other time I have had pinion problems was on an F250 when the u-joints were going out. Im not having that problem with the Ex, the u-joints are nice and tight no play.
I have found my rear axle vent plugged up twice by dirt. I realized my problem because the vent hose where it connects to the axle had some gear oil around it. It had a plastic 3/16" V in the end of the hose and would cake with dirt. I modified the end cap with a larger plastic T. Since I live on a 1 mile gravel road I now check it each time I change the oil. A plugged axle vent will cause seals to leak. The pressure has to go some where.
