I have a 1982 F150 with 4.9l. I have an overheating wire. According to the schmatic it is the ballast resistor(red Lt green) very hot to the touch. I replaced the coil with a MSD coil part #8205 coil. I also plan on installing the MSD 6A electronic ignition. I called tech support at MSD and they said the coil should work ok with the Dura Spark ignition. If I remove the + wire from the coil the wire does not get hot. Any sugestions? Thanks Art

The wire will get hot as it is dropping voltage down by using resistance which creates heat. I don't really know how hot is too hot.... but the wire is almost twenty years old and they do wear out and burn up. Making quite a mess.
Maybe it is time to change out the resistor wire, or better yet replace it with a ballast resistor... my personal favorite solution
If you disconnect the coil + how does the truck keep running? Or does it? If it doesn't, and it shouldn't I would think, that is why it doesn't get hot no current flow thru it.
