Parking light fried!!!!

I had water get into my right front turn/parking light assembly. When this happened it shorted the parking light wire somewhere between the light plug and wherever the wires split to go to the left and right lights. If anyone can help me locate where the wires split this would be grrrrrreatly appreciated.

Thank you for any help,

Ben

This may sound stupid, but remember I never designed the wiring system I only improved on it. On my 73 the RH front parking light wire went direct to the headlight switch while the LH front wire went to the rear of the truck and then to the headlight switch. It was actually spliced to all the rear parking lights.
Well it used to be that way, now it is tapped off the RH front wire. And the rear lights have their own wire from the headlight switch.
I beleive that all 73-79's are like this and maybe even 67-72's. Of course if you have one of those "new-fangled" 80's or 90's models I can't really help you

Parking light fried!!!!

LAST EDITED ON 31-Jul-01 AT 08:26 PM (EST)[p]I don't think the water did instant damage. 12 volt lights are used on every boat trailer that I know of and are submerged all of the time. Corrosion is most likely the culprit. The water may even have seeped into the bulb and cracked the element.
I think your problem may actually be a bad ground or frayed wire since it only affected the single lamp. What I would do to test the lamp are as follows:
1. Disconnect the wires to the housing. Check your continuity between the power lead(s) and the lamp housing. If there is, your insert is bad andhas shorted to ground and needs replaced.
2. If no continiuty, replace the bulb and run a jumper wire from the battery to the power lead. If it works, you have a break in the power lead. If not, attach another jumper wire to the frame or other ground leaving the jumper connected. If this works, you have a bad ground in the socket or the mounting of the housing.

These tests isolate the lamp from the rest of the circuit. If the lamp itself works, you now can work yourself back to the original power source, switch or whatever to find the break.

Let us know what you find out.
