Happy Summer to everyone, I've been having a good one using my truck as much as I can. Even with gas prices its been great to have it on the road. In a month I'll start the body shop course at the local vo-tech and hopefully next spring it will be time for paint.
My question for today is, I have a 3 on the tree shifter and wonder how hard it would be to change to a floor shifter. Why I what to do this is even with all the rubber bushings replaced and everything greased that you can once in a while things jam up, its not too bad until it happens going into 3rd merging onto the highway then its an issue, especially when the wife is with you on the way to a cruise night. Anyway any ideas on converting it to a floor shift would be appreciated.
Personally I would change to a top-shift tranny, on a 56 it's a pretty easy job and you have your choice of 3, 4, or 5-sp's (and some 4-sp's and the 5-sp's are OD to boot).
But, I had a 3spd overdrive on my 55 and it did the same thing occassionally. I found out that all I needed to do was adjust the rod length (by loosening the locking nuts on each side of the shift arm) and (I'm not quite sure how to describe this) but adjust them so they were both farther out from neutral than before. In other words the gear you are shifting into takes a little more travel of the Column shift arm/rod/arm/shift fork to engage the gear.
