air in fuel

hey everyone i have a 97 f250 psd
I seem to be taking in a small amount of air in my front tank, not enough to hurt it but enough to alter throttle response. however, my rear tank is taking in enough air to kill it. There doesnt appear to be a leak anywhere . I am rather new to the powerstrokes so i don't really know what to do. any ideas?

Are you saying that the fuel is being aerated and if so how do you know this? Both tanks are vented to the atmosphere.

When do you experience the problem, right after starting and driving or do you have to drive the truck for awhile?

What type of maintenance have you done on the fuel system ie drain fuel bowel & change the fuel filter, clean the screen in the fuel regulator and last but not least, have you checked the fuel pressure?

This is done with an analog tire gauge on the drivers side, bottom of fuel filter. It looks like a tire valve. The pressure reading will fluctuate a lot so just use the average of the readings. A fluid filled gauge helps to calm the fluctuations down.

HUmmmmmmmmmm...........
Sounds like the same problem I have. My tank keeps becoming aerated after I drive a few miles, It doesnt leak, and it was never a problem until fuel prices climbed so high. LOL

Let me clarify air is getting drawn in with the fuel. the flow is significantly differant when you compare the front to the rear tank. i bled the system with that valve when it was on the front tank it sprayed the diesel out when it is on the rear tank the fuel just flows out. there is definatly a differance in fuel pressure i haven't checked it. i thought it would be the tank selecor that all of the fuel lines tie into but i don't know.

Rodney, I think Todd was just joking about his tanks being empty from fuel prices.

Lazy, I'm really fuzzy on how you are seeing the flow of fuel. Are you saying you are pushing the shrader valve with it running and it's spraying everywhere? Or are you cranking it over without the fuel bowl lid?

What happened to cause you to look for this? Just want to help here if I can.

Let me see if I can understand you?
You are getting less fuel flow from the rear tank to the front?
The engine runs significantly worse on the rear tank?

WAG: you have a cracked or broken/cracked fuel pick-up tube in the rear tank. It's a fairly common problem.

Try filling both tanks and see if the problem still exists after 15-20 minutes of driving. Any air trapped in the fuel system can take a long time to to get rid of. Also, this may explain the lack of power, throttle response, while running on the front tank. The air may be left over the rear tank or your FPR screen is dirty. The screen filters/protects an orifice that is only .040 diameter. This orifice is the only way air trapped in the filter housing can be removed without sending it through the injectors again and again.

rubberduck the fuel at the shrader valve was when the engine was running yes there is a significant differance of pressure however i bled the system after running on the rear tank and switching it back to the front i could just be wrong about the front but the rear is severly comprimised. i was also thinking the pckup tube i'll fill it up today and see what happens.

thanks guys

Where did you get the spec of .040?
Is it the IH spec?
The only test i have used for air, is a clear hose looped on the return
line. It will show if air is getting in the system.

MAD, I spotted it in a fuel diagram. I think I read about it too but can't find the quote in the manual.
Here's a pict of the fuel diagram...we can make a "Where's Waldo" game out of it

Ford's spec is .020.
IH spec is larger. I have been trying to find the IH spec
with no results. IH sends more fuel back to the tank for cooling reasons.
Seems as per the chart IH is .040. Just what i was looking for.
EXCELLENT!!! Cannot spread the love Jim or i would!

Bill, I never paid attention to the difference, just remembered that it is a very small opening, learn something new everyday. Maybe bigger is better in this case....should purge the air faster but might reduce the pressure or volume sent to the high pressure side of the FP. I wonder how much difference a larger hole would cool the fuel....Oh well, I guess every little bit helps. LOL
