My brother in law has a 1989 F-150 and is considering permanently removing the transfer case as it's a road truck and he gets miserable gas mileage. Is this possible? If so, any ideas on whether or not this is even cost effective?
agreed. the xfer case is lust 100lbs of ugly metal. if you pull it off, you have to delve into the tranny and replace the output shaft and find a tailshaft.
I have 1 89 150 aod 2wd left in stock, but I think it goes tomorrow otherwise Id strike up a deal!
Would be better just to find a Two-wheel drive if he goes that far. He has more weight in the front axle than the 100 lbs wet weight transfer case has in it. Then he would have to get longer drive shafts and figure out if he needs a two piece or one piece. Re align the truck, curse the fact he got rid of a perfectly working 4x4 when he gets stuck or cant move on solid sheets of ice, etc. He could just sell the 4x4 and get a 4x2 and be money ahead at this point.
