Want to replace points with electronic ignition

LAST EDITED ON 14-Aug-01 AT 04:03 PM (EST)[p]Hello - I have a 1972 351 CJ which has single points for ignition. I would like to move to electronic ignition, for performance, reliability and reduced maintenance. I know I can drop in a Mallory or Accel distributor for $180 or so - but how about the kits available for $80 or so? These kits install in a few minutes, replacing the points with a magnet wheel and a pickup. Any experiences or suggestions? Will the kits allow me to up the voltage?

I am also upgrading the carb soon, and will be doing other upgrades in the next year, such as intake, headers, and cam. Thanks...

Tom

I beleive you are referring to the Pertronics(unsure of spelling)Kit. I have read many good things about this kit, easy to install, great improvement etc etc although I have never used one myself as my truck has duraspark. Just do a search on the name and I am sure you will find some "stories".

Put a Pertronix unit in the 351W I have in a 65 Mustang. Great unit - the only way to go. Cost about $70 and takes about 20 minutes to install. No more points forever !! My second choice would be the Ford Duraspark (blue gromet) system. Little more complicated to wire in, but, parts will always be readily available (need a module and mag pickup distro). Put one of those units on a 351W in a 64 Galaxie. Also works great. Either system is a winner.
Good Luck

Go to a junk yard and get a dist from a 351m/400/460. Get a Ford module with the blue connector and wire it.
