What are those flaps on the back of the second seat for any why didn't Ford make a better way to secure them? Has anybody come up with any clever ways to secure them when the velcro wears out?
What are they for?
If you flip the seat bottms up , then fold the seat back forward, the flaps are to cover the foot well of the 3rd row seat - making a nice flat floor for loading stuff.
A better way to secure them?
Nope, not yet - but then again mine are not problematic right now. I suppose when they get that way, I'll be like you... wondering why Ford didn't do a better job with them and what I can do to fix their short comming.

I just installed a couple of child seats in the middle bench, the strap comes down over those and onto the hook behind the seat. Beeeautiful fix
I think some have ended up using a button snap, one pc screws into the hard base, and install the top button on the little flap.

I may try the snaps. I've still got two in car seats (out of 7 kids). One is an infant seat so I don't have that tether strap and I moved the 3 year old to the back seat because she learned how to get out of her seat and was always climbing in the back so I lost that tether holding up the flap.
If you don't ever fold the seats down then just remove them. It's like 4-5 screws. Mine are in the garage.
I agree. I haven't had the 2nd or 3rd row seats in my ex more than a few days total since I bought it. No kids, just dogs, lumber, plywood, drywall ride in my Ex
When I do need the 2nd row seats for hauling people, it takes less than 10 min to install them both in the truck again.
I cut the velcro strap off and replaced with several Mushroom fasteners. Small disk (about the size of a quarter) with a bunch of little mushroom head that interlock. One on the flap mates to one on the seat. used some washers to make sure everything was even. Works OK but they do still sometimes fall when you slide the seat back hard. I'll find some pictures somewhere. I did post on this some 3 months ago.
Found them ! They are Mushroom Head Fasteners. I picked them up from McMaster-Carr on line for $8 a package of 10 (5 sets). I purchased 2 packages and used 3 on the small seat flap and 5 on the large seat flap. I wish them made them about 3 inches in diameter.
