I usually don't have problems but today was special.
Started out ok,... drain oil, loosen filter so it can drain, while it's draining I get the grease gun and do the front end. So far so good, trouble starts when I take the filter off with my rubber gloves on... usually wrap a rag around it ... duh not this time... somehow the filter ended upside down on the front drive shaft and 2 qts. of oil on the floor... what a friggen mess, and a bump on my noggin trying to get the heck out of the way. Well it's 2 hours later and finally done Thank God.
We've all had those kinds of days Bill. That's why I always poke a hole in the bottom of my oil filter and let the oil drain out of it too. I don't get all the oil out, but at least my stain will be smaller.
I love it when the oil runs down your arm and into your armpit... That's when the poke the hole in the filter routine is now standard for my oil changes.
Dont feel so bad Bill. Couple weeks ago I did a timing chain job on a Maxima, engine out-fixed-back in, in about 6 hours. Running to bleed the cooling system, stepped in to rev engine a little and "CLANK". My dumb azz didnt tighten the crank bolt, pulley fell off, keyway kicked out, gear spun on crankshaft and bent all 12 intake valves. Needless to say I was working for free the next couple days. It happens sometimes.
Sorry about your mess. Amazing how far 2 quarts of oil will spread if you dont have something to catch it quick.
I feel you Bill. Last change I did, I took the clip off the fumoto and it shot right down in the pan. Now I had been running the ruck about a half our before I started on the oil change so the oil was good and hot. I stuck my hand in the oil pan with the rubber gloves on so it was a delayed reaction for the rubber to heat up. But let me tell you, boy did it heat up!! Luckily I was out from under the truck when I did it or I would have bumped everything on me to get that glove off.
Poke the hole in the filter, going to be standard procedure from now on. Oh, 2 qts does spread far...and wide. Yep, one of them days. I'd just like to sit on my butt the rest of the day but have to go to work... ha, ha, I will be sitting on my can at work I drive a fork-lift.
Bill, that is almost exactly the way I figured out to poke a hole and drain first. EXCEPT, I had the wise idea to do it at work on night when things were slow. Pulled into a nice clean work area, (energy center and carpenter shop), put down a drop cloth to keep it nice and clean. Followed your game plan to a tee, when it slipped out of my rubber hand, it hit the floor and proceeded to roll across it for more that 25ft. Now that's a mess. Spent the next 2.5 hrs cleaning the shop floor and wall. Almost forgot to refill with oil, trying to get out of there before day shift showed up. So, you made me fill some better.
Yeah, I think we have all done it before one time or another, today was probably my biggest mess, working on the truck anyway. life goes on. I think there's a sunday school lesson in there somewhere.
There are probably a few lessons in all of these stores...but the #1 lesson I have learned when changing oil or working on the truck is to wear crappy clothes. I have to re-learn this lesson again and again and again. I always think I can get away with wearing my nicer clothes and to be "extra careful". Life just seems to kind of laugh at that one..because even if you finish a job and remain spotless, you'll be walking away and step on a ladder and the ladder with fling your rag up at you and it'll land on the back of your shirt..
Another thing I learned is, never change oil into an open container. While taking the filter off, yep, slip, oil splashes everwhere. Now I use one of the 15 qt closed pans with the little hole in the middle.
I use one of the wife's 2 quart ziplock bags(I guess its 2 quarts) to wrap around the oil filter when I spin it off to catch the inevidable oil that drips down off the filter. The bag is slightly taller than the filter so it works great without getting messy.
I also use the fumoto valve to drain my oil into the empty jugs that I used from my last oil change. No more mess.
We've all had those kinds of days Bill. That's why I always poke a hole in the bottom of my oil filter and let the oil drain out of it too. I don't get all the oil out, but at least my stain will be smaller.
Hope your head feels better.
I'm a big poke a hole in it too fan, but a lesson learned at my University was always loosen the filter a hair first. Just in case you're not going to be able to get the filter off you're not stuck with a filter with a hole in the bottom.
