System isn't charging for some reason :(

I have an 89 E150 Ford van, (300 straight 6) that stranded me along the road last night because the charging system quit working. I assume the alternator probably failed, but is there anything else that I should be looking at instead/also? I haven't had time to look at it yet, but is there a separate voltage regulator, or is it built into the alternator? Any suggestions/hints would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Sorry missed the post, you probably have it fixed by now but there should be a separate voltage regulator. Most parts places will test both the regulator and alternator for no charge, so you don't replace good parts.

My '89 F250 did the same thing a while back. Turned out to be worn out brushes. $7 from the parts store and about an hour to install. It's been fine ever since.

And if I remember right, the regulater is attached to the back of the alt., but it can be replaced seperatly.

Thanks guys. I ended up replacing the Alternator, because the brushes had worn so much that there was a deep groove worn in the one armator surface. By the way, I replaced it with an alternator for the 302, because it was less expensive and had a better warranty. I just had to rotate the front housing 180 degrees and change the pulleys.
