Oil change question

Hey guys, I just recently bought a 97 F350 with a 7.3 PSD, and i want to change the oil to get a starting point.

My questions are:

1) Is Delo 15W40 a good choice?
2) Do I need to add any additives?
3) Does it take 14 Qts?

Thanks for your help.

Kevin

Don't trust your dipstick. Many of them were marked wrong. Not sure of the details but I had a bum one. It will read so many quarts lower that what it is supposed to be. You can tell buy the numbers that are stamped on the stick but at the moment I am not sure what the good numbers are. Ill get back to to on that. What year is you truck?

If yours is stamped 1820068C1, it reads 2 qts too low.
you can replace it or just scribe a new "full" line thats the length of the crosshatch area above the current "full" line. it should land somewhere on the old stamping of word "full".

The refill for the crankcase is 14 quarts for 94-97's and 15 quarts for 98.5/99's with filter change. Some early 95 and older engines were equipped with a 12 quart dipstick (Navistar P/N 1820068C1) and need to be filled to just over the word "FULL", or replaced with the correct part (Navistar P/N 1824405C1; Ford P/N F4TZ-6750-E for F-series; F5UZ-6750-A for Econoline). Some later dipstick tubes were not seated properly causing the crankcase to be over-filled in an attempt to bring the level up to the mark.

I use Delo in my truck and have very good luck with it. I know a trucking company that uses it in everything they got so thats pretty good proof to me its good stuff. Id watch that rotella, about 2-3 years ago they changed their blend and its not quite as good as it once was.

I use Castrol 15-40 with a quart of Lucus oil stabilizer. I use the Lucus in my other vehicles too for years. Haven't heard anything about Castrol being bad for diesel so I figured why not use it since I use castrol on the other rides.

I've used rotella 15-40 in three 97 psd's and a vw jetta for a few years now, and I've had good luck with it. no oil-related issues, anyway...

Any correct weight "Diesel Rated" oil, key word is "Diesel Rated", will work. I run Delo 400 15W40 and like it. I like the Moly in the Delo it helps with oil shearing, Rotella and some others don't have the moly as far as I know, plus Delo is what my bulk fuel supplier carries.

Delo is good, 14 quarts with filter change. The dipstick issue was the 94.5 and some 95's so a 97 shouldn't be an issue. As Plowhand said any Diesel rated oil is good. I am partial to Rotella but that's cause we get it by the 55 gallon drum at the shop.

I use rotella and have been pretty satisfied with it. I was unaware that Castrol made an oil specific for diesel applications.
