I have a 1997 4.6L F150 truck. Lately, for no reason at all, as far as I can tell, the oil light comes on and the engine temp. gauge goes way up (they both happen at the same time). Then they'll go off, then back on. I know I'm not low on oil, and I know I have plenty of coolant...anyone know what the problem might be? I've heard some people say that the voltage stabilizer could need to be replaced, where exactly is the voltage stabilizer? Is it difficult to replace? Or maybe it's not the voltage stabilizer? I can't seem to find a lot of good info on this problem, although it seems I'm not the only one this has happened to.
Im not a truck expert like some of these guys but I would check my computer code first. Also I just had to replace the oil pressure switch and the temp switch...but you could be looking at whatever controls that being the problem. Definitely check that code first.
Hope this leads to something,
Josh

The older trucks had a guage regulator mounted on back of the instrument cluster. It takes 12 volts and steps it down to approx 5v so the guages won't fluctuate when you rev the engine. Does it happen when the engine speed changes? But that doesn't explain why the oil light comes on, which I wouldn't think would be affected by the reg if you have one. How about bumps in the road? Do they make it screw up? Maybe you can do the old take it apart and put it back together trick. I've fixed alot of stuff this way, mainly because of loose connections.
