Okay, I am going to show my lack of depth here. My 2004 SD F350 6L has developed a unique feature. When I start up in the morning it runs just like a gas engine with a dead cycliner. Once it warms up, happy as can be. Sound and performance is good. I do have to admit I think I might have an exhaust leak (sounds like a header leak). Any suggestions aside turning my bank account over to the local dealer....Thanks folks
I would get hold of a can bus scanner and see if you have any hidden codes. Then I would get a hose or something to pin point where the noise is coming from. The miss could be caused by any number of things like a glow plug or an injector. Post back if you get any more information.
Had the same problem with my 2006. It was an injector going bad. Started out only doing it when it was cold. It threw a code and they reflashed the PCM which made it go away for a month or so. Then it came back and one day it didnt go away when it was warm. Tried to take it to the dealer and ended up on a roll back.
I also had a glow plug go bad but in my case it simply held the injector open and was dumping fuel in the cylinder. It smoked like a train even at an idle.
See if you are throwing any codes. My CEL never came on for either of these problems (not until the engine died ....of course!!!!) but there were still codes to diagnose which cylinder it was.
I had a problem like this with my 2000 x with a 7.3, i know you have a 6.0 but it would act the same i think? Anyway what i found was that the Glow Plug Control Module had a problem in it and when i would start it cold it would kind of stumble on one hole and then start and miss for a little bit. I removed the GPCM from my wifes 6.0 (they are the same if you have Cal. emmissions on a 7.3 ) and put it on the 7.3 and it fired right up like the day i bought it new! So, if you know any one that you can take the GPCM off of and switch it out it only takes about 10 minutes, it is on the passanger side valve cover and it takes a 10 mm socket to remove, i don't think you have to remove the one on your truck just unplug it and plug in the loaner and try it. Hope this helps! Good Luck!
my wifes 6.0 03 F250 seems to be having the same problem. stats up horribly when cold, pulling out of the parking space it will sometimes "lope", engine revs up, and now sometimes dies on her at idle. yes, the CEL is on, and planned on taking it to the stealership tomorrow to get it looked at. California now has a law that will not let Auto Zone lend out OBD's anymore, or i could have checked the codes myself.
