65 Ranger

Hello
Just purchased a 65 Ranger, all original including air cleaner assembly, looks like an oil bath, has a fill line, can I remove the mesh type element and use a round paper filter inside the original assembly?

Did you use the search feature? Garbz has written on it several times.

As others mention welcome to FTE; I don't understand way you would want to remove the mesh and run a paper filter; but everyone has his or her reason. I been told the following Fram filter will fit. CA146 & K&N filter part # E4690.
Let us know the out come. And again welcome aboard.

This oil bath may have been run dry for who knows how long, the metal mesh up in the housing is brittle and falling out in little particules. Couldn't this get into the carb? Where does the actual dirt get collected when there is no oil. Like I said, if I tap this air cleaner on my bench, little pieces fall out, I'm not at all convinced this is good filtering. I have never seen a new or performance engine of any kind with an oil bath.

Jeff, Can you load some photos in your user gallery, so we can see what you are describing? Something doesn't sound hunky-dory to me with what you are describing.

Look up on the blue banner and click UserCp and edit gallery, and load your photos.

Welcome to FTE and congrats on your Ranger purchase. I think you'll find that most of the "seasoned" members actually will prefer a "properly setup" oil bath over the paper filter as it does a much better job of trapping dirt and dust. If the guts in your is coming out in pieces then that is another story. My theory is: the reason you don't see oil bath filters on modern cars/trucks is that the manufacturers realized that if they replaced the oil bath filter with the paper one then they could sell millions of paper filters each year = $$$$$$$$$.

I would simply use a totally different air cleaner...67 up use the paper type...no oil, no muss, no fuss...Keep the oil bath though...not as easy to find as they used to be...
As far as filtering...the oil is what caught all the crud...when its run dry..my guess is what you are knocking out of there is some really old grit and grime that was caught long ago...

Welcome to FTE

Rusty mesh in an oil bath air cleaner could only be caused by one thing, IMO.

The air cleaner was off the truck in two pieces, the mesh portion was laying on the ground which exposed it to the elements which caused the mesh to rust.

Some previous owner either removed the air cleaner for some reason, or there was no air cleaner, so one was found and stuck on the carb.

I'm a fan of oil bath air cleaners, but in that condition, I'd chit can it and get another oil bath, or a dry type air cleaner off a 1963/67 352/390 Galaxie and use that instead.

How hard are the car type dry air cleaners to find nowadays ??? Or are they a real pain to find in decent useable condition ??
