Responsible Dog Ownership

I am getting pretty frustrated at some other people and thier dogs. I have a few bull terriers and have always toed the line on my responsiblilities with thier care and conforming to all the local laws. Within the last six months and most recently in the last ten days while walking anyone of my bullies on a leash in the public park or on the street have been mugged by off leash dogs. ONe time I was walking my older bitch down the middle of the street and out from a house comes barreling this big shepard dog right at her. Two times over the last several days this guy walks his springer spaniles off leash and his male runs up toward my young male bullie and stops about 5-10 from him and stares him out. Last week in the eveining I had the younger bitch out and this beagle comes out of nowhere right at her in full attack mode and just last night I was sitting on the park bench with my same bitch and this lab full speed ahead comes running right at her. This is really starting to **** me off real bad and I' m about to unleash them and let them defend them selves. There are leash laws, registration laws etc etc. but enough is enough. I getting a long heavy stick to carry and a break stick and if these dufus people want to let there dogs run amuck with total disregard for other and one of thier dogs happens to run into the jaws of one of mine then so be it. Not exactly what I care to see or have happen but lately I can't seem to avoid it and I have rights and priveliges too. My dogs are always on a leash and under my control.

Thats when you call the police. If the police don't want to do anything about it then go to the city council meeting and lodge a complaint there. If that does no good then I would say do what you have to do. We have a lease law in Chugwater and it does not matter. I called the sheriff for a dog scratching my door of my car to get to my dogs. The sheriff said that they can not do anything. So I asked if it attacks me you cant do anything. They said that was different. Well if I get attack someone will not like me.

Too bad you are having this problem. Keep in mind, for the other dogs, that they are just dogs, and its the owners fault, not theirs.

If I were to have this problem, I think I would take the other dog and hold him down, or grab its collar (im not afraid of dogs of any size or aggression) and wait for the owner to come to you, then have a little chat about it. Hell bring a cellphone along and call the dog catcher, or someone that can help you deal with it, if you want to take it that far. Lastly do make sure your dog is protected.

My dog is one of the friendliest lab/retrivers there is. She loves to play with other dogs, and kids and anyone she meets. She is absolutly no threat to anyone off of her leash. However, I leash her up whenever i take her out and there is other people around (at my farm she just gets leashed for training purposes, and for going for walks on the road) as a respect to other people and dogs out there that dont want my pup going over to them and lick attacking them.

Few weeks ago, wife and I are driving by the local park on our way home. An older guy is sitting on the curb with his Lab on a leash, and two little Schitzu type dogs were loose jumping around on him and the Lab. As we stopped at the corner, at first I just watched, enjoying watching him play with his dogs. And then I realized he was NOT playing, he was in pain and in trouble. So we stopped and tried to help, ended up calling 911 because he could not stand up. He was walking his Lab on the leash and the two loose dogs had got his Lab excited and they all pulled him down. I think his hip might have been broken but I don't really know. They transported him to the ER to get checked out. I walked his dog home which was just a few blocks away.

The Schitzu's continued to be strays wandering around the park. I have no idea who they belonged to, but the owners carelessness hurt this gentleman pretty badly.

Drove the point home to me that the consequences of letting your dog run the streets can be serious indeed, no matter how friendly they might be.

As much as I'm sure you'd like to, it's prolly not a good idea to turn your dogs loose to "combat" the situation. Carrying a stick is a good idea, you could use it on the dog AND it's owner...OK maybe not the owner, but if your dog gets agressive and puts the hurts to another mutt, you're going to be in trouble no matter how it started.

I am just irritated and blowing smoke mostly. I just wish people would realize there are laws, abide by them, yet I also understand them wanting to let thier dogs run off leash, which I don't have a problem with as long as they don't get in my dogs face. I am trying to teach my bullies to not be dog aggressive, which they are not currently, but when they are leashed and a dog comes barreling at them and gets in thier face that is a challenge to any dog. Some people don't understand the doggie mentality. I also show two of them and I don't want them to feel threatened in any way while at the shows, so far so good. But if this stuff contiunes one more time I am taking action with animal control, before it gets ugly. Yesterday the lady with the lab off leash had no control over it at all. When it came running over to m y bitch getting in her face I had already ask her to get control of her dog. She did nothing and her comment was "Oh he won't hurt her". So far I have been able to get between them and pull mine away and use verbal commands. Anyway I need to use the park and the small basketball area for some training for the show this weekend, so I'll take the big stick to smack the owners if and when needed.

Talk to your mailman and ask him to get you a can of " Halt! " which is the dog repellent issued by the US Postal Service. Next time the dogs come by, spray a shot to the head. and they will retreat fast. I delivered mail for over 30 yrs in a residential area, and used this product only a few times, but it saved me from a couple of dogs, especially a pit bull that was later destroyed by the police. It works!

I can see why you guys would go after the dogs (ya gotta do what ya gotta do) but its too bad ya really couldnt use that "halt" or those rubber bird shot rounds on the dog owners!

Very very rarely is there such thing as a bad dog, its most of the time a bad owner.

About 15yrs ago the neighbor behind me had to learn the hard way to restrain his dog. I and other neighbors called him several times about this dog. Even called the sheriff a couple of times to have it on record. One Sunday while washing the truck and my dog lying on the deck, his dog attacks mine while he stood back like a chicken not knowing what to do. Well when it was all said and done it cost him a $2500.00 vet bill, and my dog died 2 days later costing him another $1000.00. The county removed this dog and had it destroyed. Never understood why someone would even want a vicious dog.

We cannot walk our dogs arround the block (On Leash) for this very reason. The neighborhood dogs attack. We have three neighbors that a live at the end of the street they all let their dogs run loose, they have formed sort of a pack and it makes it impossible to walk our dogs. We live outside of the city limits so there isnt much we can do to stop/prevent it.

There are an awful lot of people who just shouldn't have dogs. My wife has taught me an awful lot about animals, and it's really made me appreciate what good animal ownership is all about. ( She also tried to teach me obedience, but I'm only good at the long sit and down)

Anyway, some folks shouldn't even have dogs on leash. We were stopped someplace and my wife was 'exercising' one of our Shelties. Another car stopped, and a lady got out with an Akita. Unfortunately, she couldn't handle it, and it came after our dog. My wife is far from an athlete, but she is determined. She swung her dog out of the way and grabbed the Akita by the scruff. Then she chewed the owners good and proper for not controlling their Akita. ( She also chewed my heinie because I never noticed that she was in trouble, and just sat in the car )

It's really a shame. We used to show dogs, and there would be 500 to a thousand dogs in very tight quarters -- I never saw a fight.

97 HD, you should be able to call the sherriff, even if you're not in the city. . Dogs in a pack can be very dangerous, and the cops should be willing to do something. That's a public safety issue, they could easily go after people -- especially kids.

o2bnok,

Man, I hear you!
People berate me for having "those satanic pitbulls" while their frantic, unsocialized *insert dustmop here* is jumping on, yapping and nipping at both me and whichever dog I happen to be walking.
No matter that the one in my avatar is a certified therapy dog...
I don't even bother walking on the street or in the park anymore.

Much as you might want to, retaliating will only get you and your dogs in trouble.

Isn't there a leash law where you live? Use your phone, take some pics and be willing to sign a formal complaint against the owners.
I volunteer at the local animal control and can tell you the fines will add up fast, hopefully they'll get the idea.
The law is for everyone to abide.

Too bad these people won't invest the time to train their dogs what is, and isn't, appropriate behavior.
I don't blame the dog for the owners failure to be responsible.

Oblivious idiots.....

We used to have a problem with dogs running loose all the time in our area and even had a rotty from down the street sit at our front door and wouldn't let my wife out of the house(he was a big chicken with me though) but dog attacks got so bad that our township really started to crack down on the owners of these dogs(pit and rotty owners more so) to the point that they will take the dog and you can't have it back until they put a 6' fence with concrete along the border and signs in red letters stating dangerous dog beware, and if they get loose again thats it for the dog and the owner is not alowed to get another in our county.
