how tough are fmx trannys

ive been looking at buying a 70 maverick grabber body i need a engine and tranny to go in it. i have a good fmx that came out from behind a 351w.would u guys remend using this tranny in the mav ,ive heard mixed emotions about this tranny some guys say use because its alot stronger than a c-4 but weaker than a c-6 tranny i will be using a 302 mildly built

I would say that it is as strong as the c6, they just leak alot even with new seals and gaskets.

Man, the FMX brings up mixed emotions for me...I had one that lasted for years, but had another one that mysteriously lost 2nd gear. The car would shift straight from first to third...couldn't even manually select 2nd. Overall, I'd say they're a decent tranny, but not Ford's absolute best. All things being equal, I'd take one over a C-4, but I have a soft spot for C-6s. Theoretically, they should be strong as hell (but they are HEAVY) because of the cast iron case. OTOH, I've never really seen any performance parts out there for 'em.

I'd say that behind a mild 302 in a light car, you probably wouldn't have any major problems with the FMX...just my 2¢.

I had a friend in high school that had a FMX in his '73 351C 4V Mustang, he couldnt brake it. His signature move was to power brake/spin wheels till the rear tire poped... I had one in a '70 351W Ford Custome 500, never failed me... Come to think of it, the only Ford automatic I ever broke was a C6

The FMX is a decent transmission, it's just severly lacking in aftermarket support.
